Need 1985 Calif 617 Trap Oxidizer Struts

1985 California edition 300CD came with a trap oxidizer. There are three metal struts that serve as brackets. Two of the struts fasten to the exhaust manifold stud located under the turbo. One strut fits to the exhaust manifold where it attaches to the trap oxidizer. I need these three struts. I also need the bracket that goes from the top of the air filter housing to the coolant reservoir.

If anybody has a lead on where I can find these parts, or a junked car that has these parts, please let me know. The car would have to be a 1985 300D or 300CD California edition only. I live just north of San Diego and am willing to travel anywhere in SoCal to get these parts.

Thanks in advance!

Try m&m imports in Fontana , or , San Luis auto salvage in San Luis , searched cars-parts.com , just need to verify if they have The California emissions .and the parts are on board , with salvage it’s a guess for sure , take pics to send them , they may be able to identify better for the match , they may pull and mail parts with cc .

Look in the Row 52 posts under the diesel forum. I have posted a few w123 coupe locations in wrecking yards the past few weeks and all of them were in California.

Have you considered removing the trap oxidizer? I had that done on my 85 300TD years ago. Don't remember where I got the kit...

This! I would remove that and not worry about it getting clogged. An exhaust shop should be able to fab a length of pipe using the same mounts.

Edit: there seem to be some kits for this https://www.dieselish.com/product/trap-oxidizer-bypass-pipe-test-pipe-1985-300d-only

I removed the trap oxidizer and I am running the bypass pipe. However I have learned from MCBA members that you still need the braces even after removing the trap oxidizer.

Those MCBA members are not correct or misinformed. The only "support bracket" that's absolutely required is the one that holds the S-shaped flexible exhaust downpipe to the rest of the exhaust system. This connects behind the Trap to the exhaust manifold itself and and attaches with a U-bolt by the transmission.

Based on actual shop experience, I've swapped out about traps before on customer cars and never required or used any special support brackets and I've had no comebacks or exhaust leaks after years of use. Just make sure you use brand new copper nuts when installing the bypass pipe as well as a new metal T3 stainless exhaust gasket. If you try to re-use the old rusted nuts, thats when things can wobble loose and you can potentially get exhaust leaks

So you are saying that the struts I am talking about are not necessary when replacing the trap oxidizer with a bypass pipe? There is nothing special about these struts, they came on all the 1985 California cars. If you have replaced several traps with bypass pipes and not used these, then you must have removed them and not replaced them. And you found that this worked for you? If so, I certainly believe it I just want to confirm that you can remove the struts and not have vibration consequences.

Thanks in advance!
