Hi there, does anyone know a shop that can rebuild on of these?

Nope. But if you know what's broken, you can have any machine shop make a gear for you.

What are you trying to mate this engine to? A stock engine? Or something with a superpump?

Any decent transmission shop should be able to do a manual trans. Check local diesel truck transmission places. Where are you located?

Really? Not even Sun Valley Mercedes transmissions touches these manual gearboxes, and all they do is rebuild Mercedes transmissions. If anyone has the competency to do so, it would be them.

Post the name of one shop who will work on these mercedes gearboxes. I have yet to find one. But if you found one, then I can certainly mail in a transmission to them (they are pretty light and easy to ship).

Shops generally want transmissions that have rebuild kits, or at least they can get spare parts from the manufacturer. Well, with the 717.400.....Mercedes provides neither. And the classic center is of no help as well. Even their guy that used to rebuild them is retired and they could not refer me to any other shop to tackle a rebuild.

Are your statements specific to the 717.400?

Tom would have been the guy at classicparts probably. I have a hard time believing that mb doesnt have a parts list for the 717.400.

What about a different 717.4xx

I don't know of any off hand, I planned to start calling locally about my 717.462 myself.

Thank you. It's a getrag 717.400 off an 82 280ce. It's got the input shaft noise, but now I'm starting to hear clattering in 5th. Hoping to change the bearings etc before it's damaged beyond repair.

Not a 100% sure, but I believe Matt at Leistung ******** in Garden Grove, CA used to rebuild Getrag manual gear boxes. Leistung ******** in Garden Grove is now closed, but I think Matt moved out east.

Sorry about the lag on getting you the gearbox E-book. There is a guy up here that says he can rebuild these here in Santa Rosa. What is the issue you are having?
These boxes are noisy but really go forever if treated properly. If your chasing the rattle in neutral, the slight grumbling in first, or the input side play. I would forget about it and drive. Real issues that call for a rebuild are popping out of gear, stuck in gear, or serious grinding between shifts or loud noises while in gear. if you just want a refresh, IMO, its a waste. You could end up in a huge tail chase situation.
Your best bet to get it done is have 2 boxes go into one. 717.400 .401 .402 .403 .420 .421 .422 are your choices with internals that will work. Dealer parts, if available are very pricey, and that is the only source besides a few NOS sales here and there. Syncros are NLA. When they were it was like $ 250 each. If the 716.xx can take a beating, these can endure as well, as they are definitely more robust. The only mistake Mercedes made is using them in the Gwagon. They get a bit of abuse there and maybe not up to the task if used hard. Interesting they used them from the 200d all the way up to the 300GD or the 280GD. Makes me believe it was intended as a versatile unit capable of service in a wide range of vehicles. Its sort of the way they were heading at the point in order to enact a standardization between vehicles. That was a good thing to do, because the parts are available from a wider range of vehicles.

I Read your post #10 and the fifth gear issue sounds concerning. The bearings can be sourced through the bearing manufactures, but that is a difficult task. Its likely it was bogged in gear for that to happen. I don't know why people think it's good to run it in 5th at 45 MPH, or even worse, punch it for a hill without upshifting. There may be a gasket kit available, that is important because the main shaft and countershaft need to have the bearing depth adjusted after repair gasket thickness is important. The shims for that are available last time I checked. They could be NLA though. I gave up on mine after I spent $$$ for nothing. It drives just fine. No chatter in fifth though.
One thing to do first, be sure it is the gearbox with the issue. Rule out all other possibilities. Try cruising in fifth then press in the clutch and coast while in gear. if the noise goes away, the issue may be outside of gearbox. I would try replacing the pilot and release bearings and see if that fixes it, because that is cheap and easy, plus you would do that anyway when things are apart. Be sure its not the drive shaft as well, flex joints, center bearing, drive shaft bushings need to be dialed. The rebuild is a huge job.
