FOR SALE: 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL — excellent condition, needs engine repair
Feel free to text, call, or email:
(913) 325-7175 jdavidmurray@gmail.com This 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL ran beautifully and completed a long trip without issue until a recent, well-known M116 timing-chain failure occurred during a cold start after sitting. Prior to this event, the car had smooth idle, strong power, excellent road manners, and all systems functioned correctly. This is not a bottom-end failure, not a mystery issue, and not a neglected car — it is a classic age-related timing event on these engines, likely confined to the driver’s-side top end. ![]() I’m hoping to find someone who can put this car back on the road. All offers considered. I do have a modest local offer already, but I need to sell by end of day Thursday. The car is located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. I’m happy to coordinate with buyers on transport. ![]() 117,000 original miles. California car its entire life until 2025. Purchased in Capitola, CA in Oct 2024. Driven from California to Arkansas without issue. Very good body, no rust that I’ve seen. White exterior with Oxblood leather interior, both in very good condition. Under the hood is exceptionally clean (unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the engine bay). ![]() After sitting a couple of days post-trip, the engine experienced a timing-chain slip during cold cranking and has not started since. This is a known failure mode on M116 engines when original timing components reach this age. A more complete technical explanation is included below for informed buyers. ![]() Otherwise, the car is truly excellent. The ride quality is first-class and it attracts positive attention everywhere it goes. New tires. Air conditioning works great. Original radio professionally modified with Bluetooth. Seats, windows, lights, and electronics all function correctly. The only known electrical issue is the right mirror switch. I simply don’t have the time or capacity to repair it right now. ![]() TECHNICAL NOTES (for serious buyers): The failure pattern strongly indicates a timing-chain jump during cold start, resulting in valve-to-piston contact on the driver’s-side bank. This typically involves bent valves and possible rocker damage, with the bottom end remaining intact. This is a well-documented issue on M116 engines of this age. Importantly, the engine was not running at speed when the event occurred, which generally limits damage to the valvetrain. Happy to discuss details with knowledgeable buyers.
