Are they the early Aluminum ones or the later MB replacement steel?

They are the 500SL iron ones. Were installed under warranty in 1995.

Sorry I didn't so advise-I mailed the tools yesterday. Thanks. BTW, apparently the MBZ specific tool for installing dust boots is only $90...let me know if you'd like the part #

Neil, it's 000-589-49-37-00, and it's somewhere between $75-$100 depending on where you buy it. Wholesale Parts can get all MB OE tools at the best prices around, call Rusty @ 800-741-5252.
If you want the MB rebuild procedure for the calipers in PDF form, let me know... that's where I got the p/n for the dust boot tool.
