86 - 93 W124 Avantegard Grille Insert

I thought I might be able to get some attention with that title.

For those interested I've recently started doing a search for a Avantgard grille that would fit the Pre 94 W124 cars. The grille has to look original (MB OEM Quality) for me to consider it.

The only grille I've found to meet my parameters is the 1998 S600 OEM Grille. This grille will require minor modifications to make it fit properly in the Pre-94 Chrome Surround.

From what I have found you can purchase the 1998 S600 Grille Insert for $95.00 which is just the plastic portion, however here is the problem. There are 12 chrome strips which also need to be purchased and each one costs $12.50! , total cost not including shipping $245.00. So the question is does anyone know if these chrome strips can be purchased cheaper, maybe a group buy?

Let me know how many are interested and I'll look into a group buy.

Afshin, Eris Car Designs in Germany is the only company I've found that makes an aftermarket S600 style grill for our car:

What do you think?

Eris Car Design carries exactly the same one I've got from Germany. Cristina's friend from Frankfurt ordered one just to noticed it was the same item he bought for me earlier. He returned it to Eris after checking the quality.

Afshin,

Tomorrow I will call my buddy to get an updated price on the S600 grill with all the chrome strips. Give me a call after 4 o'clock and I will let you know how much is it. If your friend Paul would like to join us, I can get the three sets and then we can do the installation together.

Will be waiting for your call... ( I PM you my cell # ).

Paul... call me too !

Ernesto,

Thank you for the opportunity to get in on this deal , I've been really surprised at how much these grilles really cost.

I'll give you a call this afternoon to determine how to proceed. I will also continue to search for alternatives so that if we need extra's we have a good source. I believe the most expensive part is the chrome strips so as long as none of us screw that up during installation we should be ok.

As mentioned before the Plastic Insert can be purchased for $95.00 so it's not as bad if disaster strikes.

FWIW, Tom Hanson at Caliber Motors will sell parts at wholesale cost - something other dealers won't do.

BTW, let's get this thing rolling soon, huh?

It would be a great time to do it before the end of the year because of the holiday season and time off from work.

Ernesto/Paul,

Well if we're all determined to get it done before year end the only days I can do this are Friday the 20th late afternoon, Saturday the 21st early morning.

We'll be visiting our family for the holidays back east so I won't be able to make it until after the holidays if these dates don't work.

If it's too inconenient for everyone, I have no problem doing it next year, too.

My office is having our X-mas luncheon and gift exchange next Friday (here in Ontario), and I can make it after that.

Saturday is also fine. Free the whole day.

I left a message with my buddy... he is going to call me back with the price and availability.

I will have to wait until next year for the installation... I have already scheduled the following days for holiday social activities and I am flying south the border on Saturday Dec 21st. to spend the holidays with "La familia".

Don't forget to call me this afternoon.

S60 you've got a PM

Why not just buy this grill locvally here in the states, it only cost about $125. I purchased mines from Bekkers (www.bekkers.com) and I installed it on my 94 E500. Here is a picture of it install on my car http://www.nemonis.net/images/Benzsport%20Autofest%202002/15%20Shanta%20500E.JPG

1994-1995 grills are different than 1986-1993 grills.

The only maker of an S600 grill for the '86-'93 grill is in Germany.

I asked Bekker, and they don't sell one for the earlier grill style.

I wish it was that easy....
