Yeah, lots of 1986/87 heads are available. You want the 1990-95 head from the 3.5L diesel though, that is the upgraded head that won't crack. If you will take the old style head, I know there's one for $500 at Frank & Sons in NY, 516-333-4734 - I talked to Joe this morning.
Good luck, |

I'm interested in a 3.5L head, casting number 603-016-17-01, where the 7th and 8th digits are 17 or higher (20, 22, etc). Other numbers don't matter as much. It's cast into the head above the #2 injector hole. If anyone has one of these for sale, please email me at rc51@cableone.net ..... thanks!!

BTW, I wouldn't touch that head on eBay with an 11 foot pole. It's filthy - they need to be cleaned extremely well to detect the cracks, they're not large & easily visible. The pitting could be a serious problem. If you mill these heads, you can only take off a tiny amount - tenths of a mm... and then, you very likely need to buy special shims to adjust the prechamber protrusion (~$100 more)!! That thing is worth maybe $200. Don't forget it will cost you $200 in parts and 10-20 hours labor to R&R it should it have other problems...! And that doesn't count the cost of getting a GOOD head elsewhere...
Remember, the early heads are prone to cracking and the later heads were strengthened with thicker castings. here's a photo of cracks on the early head, cylinders 5 and 6: http://www.meimann.com/images/mercedes/head_gasket/crack5.jpg http://www.meimann.com/images/mercedes/head_gasket/crack6.jpg |
