WTB Driveshaft for 83 300D
 

Recently replaced the center bearing and centering sleeves on my driveshaft and something got screwed up, she vibrates at a certain speed. If someone has a driveshaft assembly (close to CT. would be great) please give me a shout at diesel924@yahoo.com

Send it to Driveline Services of Atlanta, pay the shipping and "rebuild" cost of $250 and install a "like new" driveshaft. You will be through with it for another 250k miles.

Are you aware of the alignment marks to put the two sections of the driveshaft back together? The whole thing is balanced according to it being put together with those marks lined up.

If you just randomly put it back together it will be out of balance.

We can probably post pictures of what the alignment marks look like if you aren't familiar with them.

Yep, I put it back to the factory marks and I checked it before I pulled it to make sure it was there to begin with. It took a lot of force to remove the centering bushing from the front shaft(the part that centers the shaft to the transmission). I replaced front and rear centering bushings as well as both flex discs. I didn't lose any weights. One thing I have thought of: The support bearing's rubber mount was sagging slightly, the new one raised the shaft a little. The u-joint had a spot that it was riding in that for a while and it seems to stick there when you rotated the joint by hand. Maybe I've gone out of that area now that the rubber mount is new. Whatever, it's pissing me off, I've done driveshaft support bearings on everything from Chevy S-10's to school buses and box trucks and I've never had this problem.

Yes, to me it seems to be a very sensitive design. One little thing slightly off and you feel it right away.

A vibration issue I had started with replacing the rear motor mount (actually at the transmission). My guess is this raised the transmission a bit and the same wear issue with the u-joint "detent" came up.

Then I found that one of the new flex disks I put in was warped in manufacture. You could rotate the short front section of the driveshaft when it was on the transmission (by itself) and see the darned thing wobble.

I ended up with a different flex disk on the front, and a used driveshaft, and that pretty much solved the problem.

Yes, that 'detent' could need 'breaking in'. My wife just drove the car for 25 miles and said she didn't feel it. Maybe I'm hypersensitive to this car. Later this week I'll put the car on the lift and run it in place to check for run-out. I'm too p.o.'ed to LOOK at it it right now. :eek:

Ken - I'd like to see the pic of the marks. Ask me how I came to use Driveline Services. It has a big red arrow down the side of it now:).
