FS: W124 S.S. Brakeline Kit
I bought the Goodridge G-Stop Brakline Kit from T**T***R***.
They were on my car for about 4 days. My mechanic took them off (long story). They cost me over $125..... I would like $85 O.B.O.

Give us the "long" story?
I wouldn't want my tech to take them off as well. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

Yeah, tell us the whole story, so we can crucify your mechanic.

Do they fit nicey nice in the front bracket housing? The few that I've seen don't...

I can attest to that (not fitting the front brackets) with the Troutman lines. I had to use another washer so it wouldn't go through the bracket.

maybe you could cut up an old rubber brake line, and then put it around the stainless steel line so that it stays in the holder.

Brake Lines
They fit the rear OK, but a washer is needed for the front.

Why are you selling them?..are they crimped or something? Please explain....long story made short works for me. I'd like to hear it if you have the time.
I've seen new sets for around $80-90 BTW, not to rain on your thread dooode. |

I got mine from Bekkers, same deal, washer needed up front. Only complaint is that they didn't use clear vinyl tubing over the line to protect from dirt entering the braid and it's hard to add once the ends are crimped on. But yeah, I'd like to hear the story too...

Isn't the inside line Teflon? Anyway, I think I would electrical shrink wrap mine... though my 16V Scirocco has had SS lines for over 10 years and no problems yet with crud on the lines.

Groan......OK......
I am here in Winston Salem....we have one MB dealer...to my knowledge, a few "foreign" indy garages, and one dude who's first love is MBs. Surly I don't have to tell you about the dealer; the indy shops won't do anything I want done---"Why would you want to put those new springs on your car? Your car is perfect as is, and besides, we don't put other peoples parts on cars we work on...dada....dada..dada.....".
That leaves the last one and he's a peach! Goes over to Germany every year to get re-certified as a mechanic. Works out of an old gas station...Lot full of MB's waiting to be worked on. Has two other very competent guys working for him. Has a detail service. Sound good so far?? When I first went in the shop, I looked around the shop....bunch of good ole boys sitting on the couches shooting the breeze...one guy in the corner, sitting on a chair not taking part in the general conversation. He has a shaved head and a pair of bib overalls on. He is staring at me intently while rubbing his chin...He glances outside to see my 300CE...looks at me and says, "Well Hollywood, what do you want?" I notice he has only one tooth in his mouth (lower jaw). "Ah...er...I need someone to look after my cars." And, thus began a painfull relationship... You cannot get a read on this guy...it was about a year before he actually smiled at me. Moody fellow...sometimes he will talk to you..other times he will take off like he doesn't want to be bothered with you... About three months ago, I got a part time job with Modern Chevy driving a parts truck on a route...One of the "perks" is they will work on your car for the price of parts...oil change....little stuff. I decided to paint my brake calipers on my CE. I figured I might as well put on the SS brake lines while the calipers were off. I did the front end first...everything went fine...took the car to the shop to have it detailed...when I went to pick it up...the owner says "Why did you put those little brake lines on it?" I could tell he was irritated...bad vibes...I knew it would be a waste of time explaining Bernoulli's principle to him and said it was just for looks. Now that I am thinking about it...The front lines were on the car for about three weeks...Continuing....I did the rear end, but I could not get any pedal while bleeding the brakes..I figured I could get the Modern guys to bleed the brake while I was on my route. When I got back to pick up my car, the Chevy guys were nervous and told me a few different stories about my car depending on who you talked too. The mechanic told me thay did not use DOT4 fluid on any of their cars...as I looked around and noticed a lot of Japanese cars in the garage...I said no big deal and picked up my papers, threw them in the back and left...took the car to the toothless ones' shop...After three days, I called to inquire about my car and he told me to get my ass up there. He says, "What the hell did you do to this car?...and now you have those little bitty lines on the rear!!" I tell him the story of Modern and he is pissed. He tells me the Modern guys have screwed it up. He has the papers the Modern guys gave me and it says they did a flush of my brake system..including the brake anti-lock module...he is pissed..."You never screw with that module...this could cost you $3000 because that module is expensive...dada...dada...Everybody in the shop is looking at me like I had confessed to raping Mother Teresa with a broom handle..."OK..now that I know what happened...get out of here and I will fix it!" A week later he calls me to pick up my car. I am expecting a $300 plus bill. He tells me he had to put on a new master cylinder and had to work on the brake module and had to consult with a higher authority who told him he couldn't get a pedal because of those little brake lines and so he took them off too. Gave me a bill for $900 and admonished me not to work on my car again!!! I paid up and got the hell out of there...But he did smile at me!!

Now didn't that feel better . . .
I've met mechanics/techs who fall into those 3-distinct generalized groups as well. I think the best shop is where the mechanics not only are factory or professionally trained, BUT are INTO cars as a hobby, preferably someone who races cars. The techs I left in SB were car-nuts and one was a SCCA driver. Also, the MB dealer tech was a fellow 500E owner. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E Last edited by ke6dcj; 09-10-2003 at 01:13 PM. |

Somehow I don't get the warm fuzzies about your preferred mechanic... the lines had NOTHING to do with your problem. And it's possible your old m/c was ok too (can't tell now). Sheesh, stories like this make me glad I do all my own work...
Funny part is, "those little brake lines" give you a FIRMER pedal! Perhaps the Toothless One should start reading the MBShop Forums? |

LOL...that's quite the tale...I'm not surprised one bit. My folks had retired in New Bern, NC (thank GOD they moved recently up to MD)and whenever Pops brought his S430 to get his oil changed at the 'foreign indy' the hillbillys would try so hard to get my old man to drive it 80 miles away to a dealer so they wouldn't have to do it...like it was difficult or something. At first they didn't even know the lower encapsulation panel comes off.
Not to insult you Lightning War...but if you drop your price to say $60...I might be interested. SS lines are one of the last items on my list to do for my 500E....I'm assuming the lines are all the same for the W124s....is that correct guys? |
