Dumbest Wanted request in History!

You're all going to laugh but I'm new at the classic MB game and don't know the suppliers yet. I restored a '71 XKE to 95 points and know vendors nationwide, but I'm dripping behind the ears on MB stuff :)

Anyway, I need - are you sitting down? - one plastic insert for the lug bolt for the stock annodized wheels on an '88 560SL. It came with my SigOther and I promised her I'd make it perfect. This is the last part I need and the local MB dealer said they're no longer available.

Any help will be appreciated as it'll then be done. Please email me at dittodit@earthlink.net

Thanks so much. Also, any links or names of parts suppliers for classic MB's will be appreciated.

I think you'd be better off just finding/buying a new wheel bolt.

Thanks Gilly, that's acceptable as well. I still don't know where to order it.

Gilly 01-08-2004 08:52 PM

Lots of places.
If you buy it here, you are helping to support this site (see the "fastlane" button up above, I'll see if I can find it for you.
Or else just the local dealer. I assume the dealer meant the small cap is no longer available, the wheel bolt certainly is.

The part number from Mercedesshop (PartsShop) is:
08020-99910 and cost $7.24 (plus shipping I assume). This isn't the same as the Mercedes Part number, but I believe it is a MB part.
The phone number to order it is 1 888 333-4642, or email Phil here:

Thanks Gilly, I'll do that. I assume that the part you quoted is to original spec with the plastic insert and all, as opposed to a solid bolt. I'm keeping this all orginal as you probably suspected so I'll ask Phil the question in conjunction with the order.

Thank you, Sir, I really appreciate it as this is truly the last piece.

I assume so, wish I knew for certain. Hopefully Phil can verify that before you'd order it. I know exactly what you mean about the cap though, seen them missing a few times and seen loose ones.

I think phil is sick these last few days.

I think some of the lug bolts are completely solid without those caps.

You could buy a set of four locking lug bolts and be done with it. I have the part number for the really long locking lug bolts, but its in my tool box, so Ill have to do it tomorrow.

Or you can go to the dealer, give them the vin, and they will get you the right locking lug bolts.

The dealer can probably get that little cap, they just dont want to. Just buy the whole bolt or locking bolts.

Mercedes is no longer selling the long lug bolts. They have been replaced by the shorter lug bolts.

If fastlane doesn't have the old style bolts with the inserts, try getting some used. If nothing else, call European Connection in Ky. 859-654-8632. I believe the bolts from an '88 SL and SEL are the same. Just tell Shawna (she answers the phone) that Bob-in-Covington said hi.

I have yet to find the plastic caps. Not from dealer, they told me it was discontinued -- so I ordered a new bolt from a local indie shop and all I got was a bolt w/no cap.

I've called a few used places and no go, but I'll try Euro Connection -- thanks for the info. Bob.
