Michellin Pilot Sport vs. Michellin Pilot Sport A/S

Well I have had my Michellin Pilot Sports for about a year, put about 24k on them, and they were pretty phenomenal, flawless I would say. They came a bit out of round, but I had them put on at a good shop that was able to compensate for this. Handling was extremely sticky around on/off ramps and very confident and agile in any kind of situation. Rain performance was very subpar, but not dangerous. Snow performance was non existent, as I was lucky to move the car a couple of feet to shovel the driveway.

So now it is time to get new tires. I was not happy at the short life of the Sports, although I did get more life out of them than rated. So I opted for the All Season version which have a different tread and are not as soft. I just picked up my car this afternoon and have spent the early evening hours with it.

Overall I would say the difference is much more than I expected. The car feels like it is on ice, this is the only way I can describe it. It still handles and sticks extremely nicely, but not as nicely as with the full Sports. The good thing is I get much less tramming or following the road, and the ride is not as stiff and more comfortable with the A/S. I have yet to see rain or even snow performance, but I should see an improvement.

If this is the step down I have to take going from a summer performance tire to a A/S performance tire, I would hate to feel/drive the car with a regular all season, yikes!

Well, I don't want to rain on your parade but, I recently replaced my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S with the new Michelin Pilot Sport PS 2.
What a difference!
While the A/S's work well in the rain and even light snow, the PS 2's are as different as night & day compared to the A/S's.
PS 2 = best tires I have EVER had.

Yes that is what I downgraded from, basically the opposite of you. I would say I lost a good 30% in handling/traction, although the tirerack rep would have me believe otherwise, but he made his sale.

Next time I think I am going back to the PS/2 and will just have to take the 540i out when it snows/rains!

And I personally don't see a night and day difference, but definitely a substantial difference. If you want pure stickiness dont go with the A/S. But the PS/2 were completely, and I mean utterly useless in even light snow, and they were quite squirelly in the rain. Cant comment on rain/snow with the A/S as New England is having some fluke good weather!

24k miles out of the Pilot Sports? Thats amazing. Anything over 10k, Id be happy for the fronts, 5k for the rears. AZ takes a toll on tires.

I have the pilot sport a/s. Ive driven in the rain pretty fast, they seem good. They are good in slushy snow, but not packed or ice. Chains are always the best, but they make your wheels scared up.

Im interested to try the PS2s sometime.

I think you are confused !
You went from " regular " Michelin Pilot Sports to Pilot Sports A/S.
I switched from Pilot Sport A/S to the new ( only available since March of this year ) Pilot Sport PS 2.

Manny I think I am confused, wow so the PS/2 are better than my old PS/1's? The PS/1's were phenomenal, I kind of regret switching to the A/S, but I suppose I will get more miles out of them and be able to drive my car into a tiny bit of winter instead of not at all. I wish the rep offered me the PS/2, he would have made a higher commission because I would have probably gone for them.

Do you know what the official mileage rating on those PS/2's is? My PS/1's were unofficially rated around 20k, so I got good use out of them. I would assume the PS/2 are rated close to the same.

All I can tell you, the treadwear rating is 220.
My previous A/S 's had a rating of 400.
I'm sure you will get longer life out of the A/S's you purchased.
Never owned a tire that gave me less than 30 k miles ( had as much as 70 k miles out of some tires).
Could be because I'm very " religious " about pressures, alignments, etc.

Michellin Pilot Sport vs. Michellin Pilot Sport A/S

Pilot Sports A/S, how would you rate this tire for noise, new and as it wears?

Tim

The original Pilot Sport I would rate a definite excellent for noise, and they were extremely quiet even at 24k when I threw them away. The A/S so far are very quiet, comparable to the original P/S's, cant comment on long term though.

The more I drive the car the more I see a difference in handling, much more than I originally thought. I'm pretty sure that after these I am going back to the Pilot Sport.

I seem to recall an MB bulletin that came out earlier this year advising against the fitting of the Pilot Sport A/S. The OE Pilot Sport and P/S 2s were fine, however.

Currently, I have 14,500 miles on the original Pilot Sports and have a set of PS2s in the basement (couldn't pass up the sale in August) when the originals wear out.

A friend with a C32 AMG fitted the A/S and hated them...he's had bridgestone S03 and now has the PS2s.

Just got a set of Firestone Firehawk's on a set of AMG's for the TE, and so far they seem pretty good. Handling is right up there with the Pilot Sports on the SL, and road nose is a bit lower. I am a firm believer in dedicated snow tires for the winter, so snow is not a factor. One thing I really like is that the sidewall is easier to clean than the Michelins.

The MB bulletin referred to the old A/S tires, the new ones are accepted by MB.

I dont "hate" my A/S, but I certainly am not in love with them, not like I was with my old PS/1's. I guess you dont know what you have until its gone, LOL. Can't wait for my A/S' to wear out!

If you let me borrow your car for a day or two, I'll wear them out for you.
