210 chassis tires
 

I'm due for another set of tires for my '99 E300TD. Tires have been the biggest disappointment for me on this car. I'm lucky to get 25,000 miles out of a set. Have any of you with a 210 chassis found a tire that gives you both good performance and mileage in the 50,000 range or more? I have tried Michelins and Toyos with the same poor mileage results.

'99 E300TD 70,000 miles and due for its fourth set of tires

I have replaced my OEM Michelins once with the same tire and have 105K miles on the car.

Do you align with new tires and rotate every 5k miles?

Our roads should be similar with the crushed sea shells in the pavement mix. This tends to tear up the tread in the South a little more.

Toyos should have lasted longer with a higher hardness rating.

michelins are junk...they dont give a good ride...right now i have a set of traction t/as, the ride is rough because of the aggressive tread. Next set im going with Pirelli's P zero neros. They offer great performance, and a 400 treadwear rating...

Thanks guys for the replies. Yes, I did get an alignment and do rotate every 5000 miles. Are you happy with the ride the Michelins give you? What model are they? As to the Pirelli's I'd certainly have no problem using them, but I'd sure like to hear someone who has used them on a 210 chassis and hear what their experience has been. A treadwear rating of 400 really doesn't mean much. My current tires have a treadwear rating of 400 as well as a 70,000 mile treadwear guarantee and didn't make it to 25,000.

Have to do some in depth reading there, but it sure looks like many folks have an issue with tire longevity on these cars.

I'm really surprised to hear this. The Continental Conti-Touring Contact tires that came with my car lasted over 60,000 miles. I hated them from the beginning because the wet grip wasn't very good, but they wore like iron. In fact, they still had some tread left when I got rid of them.

They were replaced with Michelin MXV-4 which have also worn very well. I don't remember the exact mileage of the change, but the car has 105K now, so the Michelins probably have 40-45K on them and still have plenty of tread left.

I agree with Rick, though I have not had my car (99E300TD) long enough to assess their longevity. I really like the Conti Touring OEM tires, though they do get just a little slippery in the rain. But they are QUIET and give a very nice ride. There is an upgraded version of this tire available too, not sure what the model number was but you can search TireRack. I had Michelin MXV4s on my wife's car and liked those as well, I got about 40k on a set. I think you can't go wrong with either choice.

sokoloff have you noticed high tire wear on your other cars? What I'm getting at is that it might not be the tire or car. (no offense :) )

No offense taken - good question. I bought the car used and it came with records. Original tires lasted about 25,000 miles as have the next two sets. On the tire rack website they have a nice feature where you can get tire reviews only for your particular model. I noticed more 210 chassis vehicles getting poor tire mileage than ones getting good mileage. Don't know if you can make a comparison or not, but I'm used to over 50,000 miles on my 240D. Rotations get done, tire pressure gets checked, etc. Don't understand this.

The Tire Rack website seems to give the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 the best reviews. I'll probably give them a try.

They do have more power, my friends W210 can trigger the traction light when you gun it! :D :cool:

I have found that some Mercedes are rough on tires. My 126 went through tires like crazy.. but I did drive it hard. A trusted german mechanic said this about the 126.. they chew through tires from the suspension design. Same may hold true for the 210. Remember, rotate your tires regularly.. front tires wear faster.
