I feel like a real idiot asking this question / how do you change the rear tire

I got up this morning to a flat rear tire. I just tried to change it and the damn thing won’t come off.
One of the things I notice was it had some sort of bolt behind the center cap. I unbolted that but don’t want to mess with much more until I get some input.

What kind of car do you have? in a 300td or sd or cd or most, you just take 5 bolts out and remove the wheel. Dennis

That bolt behind the center cap holds the axle in place against the hub assembly. Replace it and torque to spec.

If tire changing is generating questions like the one that started this thread, you may want to seriously consider a AAA membership and a newer, trouble-free vehicle with a full warranty.

So there is nothing special?

I pounded it with a block of wood for several minutes trying to free it from the rotor. I guess it’s just rusted on. I will try some WD40 and then the torch if that doesn’t work.

I'd stay away from the torch-you'll wreck your wheel bearings and seal!!! I'd replace & retorque that hub nut, put your lug bolts back in snugged up(not tightened), and take a liitle run around the block-that should be enough to work the wheel loose, and a little anti-seize around the hole in the middle of the wheel works wonders too! Good luck!

jack up the rear end, pull the wheel bolts out and beat the hell out of the inside edge of the rim with a large rubber mallet or dead blow mallet. You can do it, put some effort in it!

Remove lugs. With wheel off ground (car jacked up and supported), Face away from the tire and back-kick it with your foot. You can face it and kick, but chances are you will hurts your toes. Back-kicking it lets the full bottom of your foot conact the tire. A few times and it should pop loose.

Give the guy a break.

I've changed at least 100 tires myself and I never had the wheel stick to the hub like that. If I was new to a M/B, I might want to ask the question as well rather than beat the hell out of the wheel and potentially damage something.

Help is what we do here.

You could laugh at me today, if you want, for running the rear chamber in my m/c dry.

For a really rusted on wheel a 20 pound slide hammer works wonders.
