240D Tires

Good Morning,

I'm going to be replacing the tires on my '83 240D soon and would like the group's comments on the following:
Sam's Club has the Dunlop SP40 in 195/70R14 for $40.77 a tire. Has anyone had experience with these tires? Am I being too cheap & should consider spending a little bit more for something vastly superior? Remember that it's a 240D, so we're not going to be dealing with a lot of 'performance driving'.

Thank you!

vieux,

Didn't you car come with 75 or 80 series tires? You might want to go to a larger size 70 series tire so your odometer amd speedometer are accurate.

On my '80 300SD I went to 205-70 R14 size tires and the speedo and odo are more than 99% accurate.

Other than that the Dunlop tires should be fine.

I would recommend 205/75/R14. The 205 is a little wider and the 75 is a little taller. That fills the wheel wells better IMHO. I wouldn't worry too much about the speedo, especially with a 240.
As for the brand of tire, and this is just a product of my anality, but I go alot with how the tire looks. I know that might be an odd way to pick, but to me it makes a difference. Who wants a good tire that looks bad.

Dunlop makes some top quality tires, I would have no problem buying any Dunlop products.

I need some on my '81 240D as well. In checking Tirerack.com, they do not even carry the OEM size. They suggest a 205 70 14. That's odd, because they sold me 195's for my 300D. I bought the Kumho's. Basic tire but good reviews on tire rack. I am happy with them on the 300.
As for the Dunlop's, they have excellent winter tires. If you do a lot of winter driving that is both on snow/ice and can be highway miles on dry pavement, they make a great sport winter tire. I have sets for both my Acura and TDI.

Hockey, the problem is tire rack list it as 175/-14. I did a search for 175/70-14 and came up with 13 tire results. BTW, I think I'd still run 195/70-14s on that 81.
