Paint code for AMG wheels???

I want to repaint my wheels (ML55), the local MB dealer said all the rims are the same color of silver/gray, but they don't know what that color is exactly. Local auto paint suppliers don't know either.
Anyone know the color or code?? I'd prefer to use PPG paint if anyone has #s.

I don't know the paint code but I do know they put a VERY thick clearcoat on the wheels. This can make the silver color look a different shade than the same color with a different thickness of color coat/clear coat.

A good wheel (or even paint/body) shop can probably match it if they have to. I'm sure Luke can recommend someplace if you can stand to do the mail/return.

If I had to guess paint code I'd say brilliant silver + 2x-3x clearcoat but that is just a guess.

Hope this helps...

Thanks, I finally found a paint store that had the code. He said Brilliant silver with a touch of white, and the body is brilliant silver with a touch of black. The rims are drying right now and they look good
Yeah, seriously heavy factory coat, took me forever to remove it from one rim so I said screw that and painted over the other three.

Going to repaint some body scratches now, nice heavy keymark from an angry flip *****, some dents from a psycho white woman and three heavy scratches from careless mexicans. Southern CA is such a nice place.

While mounting a tire, the shop put a 12" long scratch on my 04 amg wheel. No local wheel repair or even the dealer's body shop could come close to matching the silver. Could you give me the name and phone number of your paint shop so I could have my guys call them? Thanks.

Automotive Painting Products
710 Rockspring Rd
Escondido, CA 92025
760-747-5505

Data on the can:
Dupont Chromabase B/C G8081KH
Car: Mercedes
Year 80-88
Code: 9705

Not sure it it will work to repair a scratch, I painted the whole wheel so a slight color diff wouldn't matter. I bought some for the body as well and it did NOT match. I need to have the whole car painted now...
But the wheels do look correct and good as new imo.
Hope this helps.

Great…I’ll pass on the info. One shop said the original paint is lead-based so I guess it’s just not available in the US. The scratch is pretty deep and needs some filler and there is a previous nick on the rim bead so hopefully the whole wheel will get painted.

Yeah, maybe...
If it weren’t for jewelry and purses it wouldn't be so bad.

Actually the flip was over a parking spot, the white ***** was because she "thought" the hi-beems were on. The mex let a chain-link fence fall on it. And the rims (all 4) mex at Discount tire that could give a fu@k

People are insane, and/or stupid, or maybe the car is a magnet for these people. More s#it has happened to this car in the past year than everything else combined in my 25yrs of driving.

Chevota,

My tire guy is a little hesitant after he called your paint guy and he said he wasn't sure of the match because of 80 to 88 model year range.

Were the AMG wheels the same for all the ml55s or what year is yours? I'll have to check out some wheels on the dealer's lot before I give him the go ahead because there isn't that much of a clearcoat on my wheel. I accidently got some brake cleaner on a wheel and the paint just wiped off to the white alloy! I might even use it to get the paint out of the AMG embossed logo so it doesn't get filled in so much where it loses the sharp corners after repainting.

Mine is a 2000. I don't know what to say about rims from the 80's, but even if it was a little different, it would probably look better rather than worse....
The dealer told me that all the painted silver wheels were all the same color, but I don't know how many years that goes back... Obviously they didn't have that paint in 1950...

I wonder if yours has the original finish or not? The ML wheels paint was VERY thick. You would need a sander or chisel to get down to the metal, not a rag w/ solvent. I tried paint remover on my first wheel and it took many applications to get down to the metal.
On my 85 and 92 190E the rims are/were silver, but sun damaged so I can't compare color, but I don't believe they were the same. Also the 190E has a very thin coating of paint, or whatever. I sold those two cars, but I did consider painting the wheels, and I would've used the same paint I used on the ML. I would look good, no doubt...

Heck, paint the spare and see how it turns out....

My year for the e55 didn't have a spare because of the staggered wheels...it came with a can of sealant and an air compressor in the trunk.

If the paint was close enough for you, I'll try to find some ml55s and compare the paint.

I got a reply from corporate at the amg private lounge and he wouldn't give me the paint code. It sounded like I was asking for the secret coca cola formula.

The tire shop owes you a new wheel. Nothing less.
