Iīm experiencing some rubbing in the front/right wheelwell with 225/45/17 tires.

There some plastic fan cover (AC?) which the right front tire rubs against when turning left.

My question is - is 225/45/17 too big forī95 E420?

Well if it's rubbing,,,,,,,, I have 215's on mine and have had no rubbing problems.

I am guessing the only way 225/45-17 will rub using the stock suspension is if the offset of your wheels is wrong/off...Mercedes-Benz use to sell the W124's with optional AMG wheels, which were AMG Aero II Monoblocks 17X7.5 ET37 (or ET35...I forgot...in that range) with 225/45-17 tires...the setup does not rub...I would check if the wheels have a similar offset to that I just quoted...if your car is lowered and the offset checks out, then move to 215/45-17...this is what TireRack recommends...

Well, Iīve just had wheels alligned - there was some rubbing on the back of the front wheelwell under braking. This was also the case with the stock 215/55/16 wheels.

Now I only have the rubbing in the front of the right/front wheel.

Iīve checked the rim, itīs 8x17 et36 - maybe thatīs just too big for this car?

Too wide...the W124, with the exception of the 500E/E500, doesn't accomodate large wheels/tires well...

Iīve just noticed that the original 16" 8loch rims are ET46 but the 17" AMG monoblocks that I have are ET36).

Does lower offset mean that the wheel sits closer to the outside of the fender?

Yes, the lower offset means that the wheels stick out more
