Michelin Hydro Edge vs. GoodYear Triple Track?

Has anyone had either of these tires? I will be buying this week. I want all weather performance and for them to wear like iron. I read some reviews and they were all positive. I don't neccesarily trust all the reviews so I thought I would try to get some real world input.

The size I am looking at is 205/60 15 on 7" AMG Penta wheels going on a 1985 300TD turbo. I wanted to go 215/60 15 as they are only slightly larger but that size seems to be an oddball.

The GoodYear was rated #1 by Consumer Reports. I do trust them.

I've got the Michelin on both my 300D and 190DT. They are great in the rain, I really have to make an effort to get them to slip.

I have the Michelin on a 124. They are typical Michys, extremely smooth and quiet. Track well on the highway and handle as well as I need a four door sedan to stick.

Can't comment on wet handling or durability. It hasn't rained in Dallas this year. As a result my spouse rides her Vespa everywhere and the car hasn't seen many miles.

They're rather odd looking with the tread grooves cut all the way out to the sidewalls. I'd buy em again.

I've got the Hydroedge on the '86. Excellent tires for all conditions. I'd never purchase Goodyear..............the chances of them figuring out how to make a round tire are just about nil.

That's easy enough.
Give the customer square tires & let him wear the edges off. :D

I know (pretty sure) that Mercedes advise against some tire models on their cars. I remember reading of a particular Michelin model that MB advise against using on their sedans. Could have been an Exalto but I cannot remember for certain.

My guess is you're talking about the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.
Found out a month after I installed them, about the M-B advisory.
The worst tires I ever had on my car.

my tire guy just talked me out of Hydro Edge's... he said too many of his customers complained that they were noisy..

We have Harmony's on both of ours.... got them for my son about 4 months ago...he drove them and liked them..

i was going to get hydro edge's for the CE, but the dealer talked me out of them....

I have the Michelin Harmony tires on my 400E and I really don't recommend them. They are VERY slippery when wet in my opinion. They do seem to be wearing well and thereby lasting way too long... I hate throwing them away, but I may just toss them some day in the name of safety.

I liked the Michelin MXV4 tires I had previously.

My son loves his Bridgestone Potenza G009 tires on his 97 C280. I see these on lots of cars these days and have to believe they are a good choice.

Just my 2 cents.

I too am not a Good Year fan. But the GoodYear Triple Tracks were rated #1 by Consumer Reports. The treadwear ratings on both the cars are phenomenal. 780 for the GoodYear and 800 for the Michelin. They are both expensive tires but I get to expense them.:D

The warranty on both of them is excellent. One factor that has me leaning towards the GoodYears is that a local tire shop that I trust has them in stock. If I buy the Michelins from Tire Rack, I have to have them mounted locally and I think the sevice will not be as good and if I have a warranty claim it will be difficult to process locally if I did not buy the tires locally.

Brian, where did you get your Michelins? How are they in the snow? I slid a couple of years ago on the black ice and it really scared me. I know any tire will slip on ice, but I want something that can at least handle the snow.

Thanks,

No Manny, I was talking about the Michelin Hydro Edge. They are all weather performance tires made with a hard rubber coumpound that can go up to 70,000 miles. I don't know of any advisory for 1985 W123 300TD turbos.

I can get any tire from the local discounter. He got the Michelins for $115 each..........and I got a $50 rebate from Michelin for buying all four.

I had the SDL on snow and ice early in the season.........March or so. It did very well. Naturally, you can slide it around if you try, but, if you drive it conservatively, you'll not have an issue with them. I never had it on black ice.

I was responding to " Ethan ", when he was talking about the Exalto!
I know about M-B's caution about the Pilot Sport A/S tires.
Michelin had a recall on them.

$115 each is better than Tire Rack, and if the $50 rebate is still available that should cover mounting and balancing. Can you tell me who the local discounter is? I talked to a guy in Riverhead and he told me about the Good Years. There is a dealer in Mattituck, but I would not trust him any farther than I could throw him.

Thanks, Brian

Hydro Edge vs. slippery Yokohama Avid?

Hi Brian,

I see you have an '84 SD, which may still have the original 14" bundt wheels like my newly aquired '84 300 SDS (stick-shift). Do you have Michelin HydroEdge tires intalled on this car too? I see they are available in the original specified 195/70 R14 size. I just had this very same tire and size on my former 240D, and loved the bad weather drivability of them, even though they were oversize for those steel rims. I felt safe.

The SDS just came with a new set of Yokohama Avid 205/70 R14, which look good but scare me to death in the rain, so far. I am getting virtually no traction starting from a stop, up hills and around curves. The SDS is really slipping in the rear, like the 240D never did. Tire pressures seem correct. Is the SD W126 body more prone to fish-tailing than the W123, or is it purely those cheap but highly touted tires?

Is there an advantage to return to the original 195/70 R14 size in a Michelin HydroEdge, over the larger Yokohama's? Does anyone have experience with either tire, or have a good recommendation? Thanks in advance!

Garth
