Hey there! I just bought a set of 15 inch rims for my 300SD and I have to replace the tires as well. I have narrowed it down to four choices in the 205/65/15 (H rated)size:
Yokohama Avid H4 Michelin MXV4 Michelin X-One Sumitomo Srixon4 BTW, I don't drive the car in the snow like others up here in Canada A comfortable ride, low road noise, and decent amount of treadlife are things I'm looking for. Suggestions? Thanks. PreetD |

Yokohama AVS dB would be my pick.

Change to 225/60/15s
Well, If you are replacing tires, might change to 225/60/15s. Its the exact same rolling diameter, and more width (rubber to touch the road.)
Try the Firestone Firehawk SH30s, $70/tirerack. Read the testimony by others: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/firestone/fs_sh30.jsp Thats my take on which tire I would choose. Almost 95% the tire of a Michelin Energy MXV4+, yet almost 1/2 the price. Great wet/dry and incredible wear rating (UTOG 460) So they wear real well. Good ride and road noise, and great life, what more can you ask for.

Only the 560SEL really needed the 225.60.15. Nothing else "needs" it. Not to mention, based on the aforementioned criteria, I would NOT use a bigger size. No need. He doesn't seem like a performance driver. Just will cause them to wear a bit quicker, possibly unevenly, more sensitive to alignment problems, out of balance problems, tramlining, noise, less hydroplaning resistance, etc. No need for the big size if not a performance driver.

If you do consider changing to the 225 size tire I have four BF Goodrich TA's with about 600 miles on them. They're yours for $100/set plus shipping.
Just a thought!

We will be testing the New RE950's this week and I will report on what we find when we complete the testing. As far as the tires you mentioned I would choose the one you forgot. The Dunlop Sport 5000 would be my pick for an all-season tire. I may change my mind after I complete the RE950 testing .... time will tell

Thought you liked the AVS dB better than the SP5000... how do they compare?

Mich MXV4
Brothers of The Benz
A short story on the Mich MXV4.(205/65x15H M+S0 I had problems balancing the MXV4. My Tire shop was at wits end, so they arranged for a Manufacture Representative to help them resolve my tire problem. He personally balanced my 4 wheel/tire. He re-balanced and a third time. His answer to the problem was there is an unbalance in one of my tires and he would renew it under thier warrantee. I ask to have two replaced to maintain side to side integraty. I would pay the difference on the second tire. He agreed and would provide me with the figures. I'm in the waiting room and he enters and very loudly say "I'm installing 4 new tires at no charge to you". Unbelievable! He could find no measurable amount of tire wear after 15 months and 33,000 miles. Now that says; 1-outstanding tires 2-excellent chassis 3-better than average driving habits In any event I recieved 4 new tires at no cost and with proper balancing technique, my 300E is super smooth all the way out. Happy Trails Beep Beep from The Spiderman in Houston!!! |
