Mod a tire gauge to work as boost gauge?

A while ago someone mentioned doing this... Anyone got some instruction for us less creative people?

Boost gauges can be had inexpensively -- you won't have to work out screwy mounting or plumbing schemes, will have lighting, and won't look hacked. Getting any other additional gauge to match would be nearly impossible. Why bother? :dizzy2:

Why bother with a tire gauge when you can get a decent 0-30psi 1 1/2" panel mount gauge for under $10 from Graingers.

Without addressing whomever wrote that... just in general ...
You have to keep in mind that anyone with a keyboard...or that can get into a library... and who can string together english words to where others think they understand what they are saying can post to any forum. No tests for mechanical aptitude, no tests for logical thinking, no tests for mental stability, no nothing.... and wild ideas seem to be attracted to one segment of that same population.
I was once part of a forum where some guys were just sure that they could hook up a leaf blower to their gas engines to act as a legit cheap blower.... and they were angry at me for telling them that did not make sense physics wise....
So it is always best to get second opinions.... good ones have been posted to this thread...

leathermang 01-15-2007 05:32 PM

But if you want to know why it won't work physics wise...
the tire guage does not have a resetting mechanism....
to read changes in pressure you would have to continually be pushing it back in... and you can't do that fast enough to act effectively.....

winmutt 01-15-2007 05:42 PM

I just wanted something I could use for some initial testing... Thanks for nothing guys :).

leathermang 01-15-2007 05:56 PM

They told you exactly where you could get the correct guage for almost free which WOULD work properly..... that is pretty good service in my book.... and they did not charge you anything for the advise....

I'm pretty sure he was joking, note the smiley.

I am pretty sure I was joking also...

Justin, How much money have you seen change hands on this site for advise ?
That is the evidence that I was spoofing also...
Are we going to need to use a smiley face for you every time we are not serious about something?
We can do that, but it would be wrong . ( in my best Nixon voice ).

i have a self resetting tire gauge, the sell them for $5 at any auto store. but no back lighting and you would have to change the connection. it is a dial 0-60 i think. i don't think he was talking about the stick ones from the 50's. in my opinion it is not worth the hassel to change what you would need to change.

leathermang 01-15-2007 08:20 PM

:) :) :) Ok guys, I guess with the bad weather everyone is taking me too seriously:) :) :)

I realize that there are tire guages which are pretty close to what would work just fine...
but the funny image is that of the stick gage on the dash with someone having to constantly slap the stick back down and trying to read those tiny marks and numbers...

I had 49 happy faces but the software will only allow 10....

79300sdtd 01-15-2007 09:00 PM

too bad you only have six showing:D

leathermang 01-15-2007 09:05 PM

When composing it appeared to have filled the top line with just six.... I did not want it to look sloppy with any falling to the second line... and anyway, it was not a Maxed out funny line...it was only worth 6 after careful consideration....
