A few questions,

1, I have a '96 C36 i need of some new tires. Since the wheels on it are a bit scratched up from the previous owner, I was thinking about instead of just getting new tires getting new tires and wheels, specifically new 18" AMG Aero II Monoblocks. According to Tire Rack's Wheel Rack it says 18x8 (f) and 18x9 (r) will fit on my car. Is this true? Will any wider on the back fit or is 9 pretty much the limit?

2, When I get my CLK55 I would like to be able to put these wheels on it. Again, according to the wheel rack, the same size (18x8, 18x9) will fit on the CLK430 (which has the same tire/wheel size as my car and should be the same as the 55). Is this figuring in a different offset or anything?

3, What tire size would I need for these 18's?

Thanks,
Jeff

The C-Class and CLKs are identical enough that wheel changes and swaps are almost identical. What fits the C-class will fit the CLK. The CLK has more options available to it though due to the fact it has bigger wheel wells.

To what I know, TireRack usually recommends wheels that will fit your car without any modification. Therefore all the wheels in the WheelsRack do not need any modification to fit.

The widest you can go in the C-Class and CLKs are 18x10 in the rear. Carlsson (an MB Tuner) has a wheels - 2/5 which is a 2-piece and fits 18x10 in the rear and 18x8.5 up front. A much nicer option are the BBS RXII which are 2-piece and have the same configuration front and rear. The only confusing part I run into is that TireRack does not recommend neither of those wheels on the CLK, even though I have seen those wheels on the CLKs. So I would check into that alittle.

If that doesn't work out, then you always have the 18" AMG monoblocks that fit both of them for sure.

As far as what tire size, It depends on the wheel and what mods are done to the already low C36 and what will be done to the CLK55. Up front, you can go with 225/40/18 up front. I always recommend Pirelli P7000 Super Sport All-Season tires for the best bang for buck. They wear prety decently, are rated all-season and handle decently. Even though they are rated All-Season, they will not come in handy besides driving in a little slush. If you want a better performing tire and still want a low price, then the Dunlop SP Sport W-10. They are about the same price, but handle handle a little better with the trade off being no All-Season capability and tire wear. If you want the best tire possible in that size, then go with Michelin Pilot Sport.

For the rear tire, it depends on what has been done to the car. What most people do is get the fenders rolled if they have to get the 255/35/18s in the rear. For people who want to avoid that, you can go with 245/35/18. What I suggest is to ask TireRack to see if a 255/35/18 wil fit in the rear with the 18x9s. I know that the 255s only fit when you have a perfect offset.

For Tire Recomendations in the 255/35/18, You have the same option above for the Pirelli P7000 Super Sports or can go with the Michelin Pilot Sport for the best. In 245/35/18, you only have the Pirelli Pzero. You can get them in Asimmetrico or Direzionale. Basically the Asimmetrico are for the rear tire which focusses mainly on dry traction and the Direzionale is a tire designed ot be placed on the fron wheel to sweep rain out of the rear tire's path. I have seen Direzionale on the rear before, but it is not meant to be there. The only other option are the Goodyear Eagle F1 Fiorano which are very nice tires, but very expensive. I would avoid the 245 option and go with the 255 option and get fenders rolled or flared if I had to.

Also, I am pretty sure that when the CLK55 comes out, that it will wear the same tire combo/size (18x8 up front with 225/40/18 and 18x9 with 255/35/18 in the rear) that you are trying to put on your car right now. Also if you plan on using the 17" off the C36 for snow tires, you also must realize that the only snow tire size is 225/45/17. There are no snow tire sizes in 245/40/17, 225/40/18, 245/35/18 or 255/35/18. So You will need the 17" for the CLK anyways if you where to use that in winter time.

My opinion, buy a set of 17" for all 4 corners in the same size and keep them as your snow tires for the C36 or CLK55. Becuase if you go lower then a 17", I believe you run into brake issues with the wheel size.

Stick situation to be in, good luck.

The tire rack has several different fitments for the rear of your car from 8.5" to 10" and in the front 8" & 8.5" are the selections Carlsson & BBS offer the 10" width with a couple of diferent designs. However the AMG wheels would be 8" & 9".
Tire size would depend on the wheel width that you selected, but I would recommend 225/40-18 & 265/35-18 ( the rear size might need a fender lip roll with a 10" wheel)

After looking more into it, I realized that the 265/35/18 might not be a bad option. If you go with the wider 18s in the rear and get you tires rolled, then their is a snow tire in 265/35/18 and also, as I found myself to be wrong, there is a snow tire in 225/40/18. So Using this setup would alow for the 18s from the C36 to be transferred to your CLK55 with the Snow tire setup ready to go.

The C36 already has rolled fenders front and rear. Looking through some tuner charts the widest size fittment I see for the rear of a W202 is 255. However rear fittment for the CLK is listed at 265/35/18 with a 26ET, 285/30/19 with a 35ET. Looking at the W202 it appears you could fit the 255 (say 255/40/17 on the stock rims) but not any bigger than that. If you can fit wider than 255 on the back (or wider than 225 up front) on a C36 let me know.

Yeah, I wouldn't go any more than 255 in back. If the supercharged K43 got by with 255/40R17 - why would you need more rubber? The tuners stay with 225 up front, also. If you need more grip go with a better tire - properly inflated!

I find I can't run less than 40 psi up front - or i chew up the side wall. For autocross i run 48 psi up front. For the rear i use 39 psi street and 42 psi for autox.
