Chrome Rims

I just brought home 4 15in chrome rims off an 86 SEL from the local Pic a Part. These are beauties. The last time I saw chrome like this, I was looking at the Chrysler Building. These rims aren't plated, they are chrome.

Are these rims "special" or were they all like this? If anybody should see similiar at the local boneyard; give them a close look. With a burnishing wheel and an electric drill I got these 20+ year old rims looking showroom.

Hate to break it to you, but everything chrome is plated.

Hey Joe.

Do they look like this? Coda's wheels are dirty in this photo.....and I cringe everytime I hit the curb on the other side. I don't think this side has hit the curb. The black shadow is inside my camera.

Chrome Rims

Upon proper reflection I must conclude that Force is probably correct. Nevertheless, When I had headers chromed during my hot rod days (copper, nickel, chrome), the collector plate would peel after severe impact with the pavement. There is a small bashing on the circumference of one of the rims, there is no peeling.

I guess I was caught up in my elation. In my defense, ain't they just too cool?

Even though my ride has the same rims as yours (mine are polished to mimic chrome as opposed to being chrome plated, which MB is against), I don't really think they "blend in" with the body color of your car. Maybe it has something to do with the painted center caps.

center inserts

The inserts don't match it is true. I am looking for an accessory that will. They are not painted but MB issue plastic.

Incidentally, H-Town, you say MB doesn't plate rims? Or doesn't approve of the practice? Well, are these rims some polished alloy or a superb plate job?

By the by, I love the way they look.

shiny....

They are very shiny......a bit too shiny for me. And they have been very much "chomed plated" I believe. Yeah, H-townboy or someone else will have to chime in about the MB recommendation. Does the plating process actually weaken the rim??? I don't know.

Mercedes Benz does not recommend plating their light alloy wheels. Most of the chrome Mercedes rims you see are Korean aftermarket knock offs, including the wheels on my car.

A toothbrush and some chrome polish does wonders for them.

By the way, you might want to replace your tires and get the right load indexed tires for your car (94H or 94V).

I hate chrome. I have chrome wheels on my 300sd and they leak, I have to fill up one tire everyday in the winter, In the summer it's not that bad but I still have to fill up that one tire every few days. I wish I could just strip all the chrome off. It's horrendous. I've gone to the tire shop about a dozen times for that one tire, the dismount the tire each time and put sealer around the bead, lasts for a few weeks, then it starts to leak again.

Sure are a lot of chrome haters here. Heh. I don't like chrome rims on every car, but I think they look good on yours.

Awesome find you got there. Keep 'em clean! :
