Tire question
Well, as I was changing my glow plugs this afternoon, my brother came over and gave me a hand. Anyway, he told me a problem he is having with his 84 300D. It seems that the left rear wheel is eating the outer edge of his tires. He swapped out a good tire and after about 3000 miles, the outer edge is worn smooth. Sort of like when you have a bad front alignment, except this is on the rear. I looked at the tire and sure enough, the outer edge of the left rear is worn smooth. All of the other 3 tires look fine.
Is the rear alignment of the 300D adjustable?? If so, what needs to be adjusted? I was under the impression the rear is not adjustable, but I could very well wrong

not much to adjust on the rear, either it's worn trailing arm bushings, or worn differential mount...
I guess it COULD be rear wheel bearings, but that'd be pretty noisy...

Well, he has owned the car for several years and it has never been hit before or since he has owned it. The rear end does whine/howl a bit at speeds above 45 or so, but I have heard that some older 300D's just do that, so......

The whining would be a separate issue from unusual tire wear. Unrelated I would think. To wear on the outside the tire must not be sitting in the correct position.
It could be toed in excessively but if that were the case I think odd wear would occur on the other side too. Or it could be sitting with too much positive camber which seems most likely. They usually are bent by sliding and impacting a curb sideways as on ice or by being impacted in an accident.

I had that problem, but not as severe. It was the shocks.

There isn`t anything to adjust, like camber, caster or to in. there is The 2 Sub Frame bushings, 4 trailing Arm bushings and the Differential mount.
If the Trailing Arm bushings are worn from miles and age, then the arm can have enough slop to move a little forward and back. the Differential mount can cause some movement also. I have dropped about 5 Sub frame assy in the PNP yards and the one under our 85 300D to replace all the bushings. Not really all that hard of a job to do. I did the 85 at 360K, and afterwards it really tightened up the rear of the car. I didn`t have any noticeable tire ware before. Take a look at the Trailing Arm for any cracks where it is welded to the Hub assy. there have been a few that have cracked from rust and pictures posted, and I think one where the shock dropped down through the arm. How many miles on this car? Differentials do ware out. the one in our 240D at 306K I replaced to up the gear ratio a bit. when I drained the oil, it was all sparkley with metal. the Spider gears were wobbley on the shaft, it wasn`t howeling but there was a slight rumble. have no idea if and when the oil had ever been changed. The rumble could be an axle, just going to have to do some investigating. Charlie
