front & rear wheels different? 300 Wagon

1987 300TDT wagon

I was going to rotate my tires front to back....seems the rear wheels are a bit different and the wheel bolts and different length as well.

I didn't investigate any further and just put my wheels back how they were...

but the front and rear lug bolts are definitely two different lengths and the wheels apparantly have different back spacing too.

Very strange. or has some previous owner gotten the wheels really mixed up on my car? I would expect all 4 wheels to be identical.

The wheels and wheel bolts in my '87 sedan are identical all around. I would expect the same to be true for the wagon but it would really be nice to hear from another wagon owner.

They are identical front to rear on my '81 wagon. Does one set look newer? PO could have pulled the longer ones off of something else.

are the wheels the same externally? same shape and design?
the only wheel MB sent out with different spacing from the others in a car is the spare on newer (I.E. cheaper) MB's and the jack compartment had a set of shorter bolts for that tire.
if it's this way on your car, it's likely the wheels were changed by a P.O.

Original wheels on an '87 T124 (USA) are the 15-hole "flat-face" alloy wheel, 5.5x15J ET49.

If you have someone who will pick them up, I have some in Michigan, I could donate a couple. Better still, bring a truck, I need to get out of the Mercedes restoration hobby.

well, i feel like a dipstick

pulled all the wheels off and started measuring... they are all the same...just one wheel had some really strange wheel bolts, with longer threads but a way shorter bolt head...so it made it look like the front and rears had different back spacing and such...

however, 3 of the wheels are made in Italy, the other wheel is made in Korea

and the spare wheel is the only one that has MB numbers on it....

very strange....

Sounds aftermarket. The original wheels all have a 124 part number in them, and ET49.

The original lug-bolts have a tall hex section, are near flush to the face of the wheel installed, have a ball-seat and the original wheels have a ball-seat for the bolts.

The original wheels look like this: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachments/diesel-discussion/78798d1269217661-87-300td-keep-dump-p3170003.jpg

the wheel style is correct...just one had short bolts..the other wheels had the tall hex section.

anyway, i've started lookin for newer MB wheels with wider openings..hate cleaning the older wheels...too much brake dust stuck in too smalll of holes...

The later 8-hole wheels are a direct swap and the ET44 works great.
