Question Hubcaps necessary?

I just picked up some used steel rims and matching hubcaps from a 1991 190E for use on my 1989 300E (thanks again for the advice I received from this forum regarding 190E - 300E rim and tire compatibility). I've mounted new Toyo snow tires on the rims for the winter.

I'm just wondering - the rims are steel rims and come with hubcaps. Are the hubcaps necessary to protect the grease caps on the front axles? Do the hubcaps serve any other function besides cosmetic? They are ugly and I would rather just have the plain black rims showing. I notice that with my alloy rims, they mount such that the grease caps are protected from the elements (the alloy rims cover up the greasecaps). I'm wondering if leaving them exposed to harsh winter conditions might be detrimental?

Are the hubs designed to protect at all? Thanks.

I think you are talking about wheel covers, not hubcaps.
One covers the whole wheel, and the other covers the hub, thus the different names.
I am not trying to be cute, just that when discussing things with people in the business say, you need to get the names of things correct so everyone is on the same page.

IMHO, wheel covers are not necessary at all. They do keep salt crap off of the wheel bolts, but you can protect the bolt threads with antiseize. The small cap over the bearing (bearing cap?) adaquately protects the bearing just fine.

So I say leave em naked if you want.

Yes, I was referring to the 190E wheel covers, I've never heard that term before. Thanks for the advice. I have removed them, the car looks much better now. They were hands down the most hideous wheel covers I have ever seen. Period.
