I am not really sure that a "tire" will ever be able to hit a caliper, ever. By design that is just impossible.

Typical caliper clearance areas are the inside of the rim, and the back of the face of the wheel.

Tire clearance is of concern to the strut, body, and other suspension components.
Right again, I need some rest. My mind is not in full contact with the fingers on the keyboard. Tire to the tie rod would be the first culprit. And back to the caliper if I dare. If a 14 inch wheel doesn't hit it a 15" wheel should be even farther away.

Thanks for all the tips. I think I'm better off sticking with the rims I have and just getting tires to fit. I didn't realize how expensive spacers are!

They can be found used. I have a stack of them that I will let go reasonablly. What thickness is needed?

I run about 8 or 10 mm spacers on my Miata for autocross and street, front end only. I feel it helps balance the car. I am running a very large front sway bar.

There are plenty of online calculators that let you vary rim width, offset, tire width, aspect ratio, etc.

A wider rim with the same offset will move closer to the tie-rod. Less offset will move it away from the tie rod.

also, if the tire diameter is not altered, the rim diameter will not affect speedometer or odometer at all.

Hello, I have 15 inch 15 hole flat faced rims off a 1988 420 sel that I have had on our 85 300TD for awhile now. It seems that we need tires and was wondering if moving up to the larger 215/60/15 will still fit. We have 205/65/15 on there right now with no problems. How is this tire bigger? I know nothing about tire sizes.

The tire I am looking at requires a 6.0-7.5 inch rim width. How wide are these w126 style aluminum rims?

You have to be careful if you purchase used spacers. Not all will fit on the front of w123s.

I got caught on that when I bought a set of 16" CLK alloys that had been on an early series R107. The w123 has a thicker front grease cap/hub opening measurement... the spacers I got with the wheels wouldn't fit.

Rears are no problem on the w123.

215/60/15 should be about the same as the tires you have now, any difference will be very small.

Most major tire manufacturers have specs on their websites for all their tire models in all available sizes, including overall diameter.

Also as someone else mentioned, there are numerous tire/wheel calculators online where you can determine the difference between the original equipment wheel and tire size, and your desired target.

Comparing the two:
the number break down like this: (Cross section size/aspect ratio/rim size).
The aspect ratio is the percentage of sidewall in the total cross section. As this number gets smaller, the sidewall gets smaller and the contact patch gets wider.

So to compare your example: From 205 to 215 is a larger carcass, the 65 and 60 aspect ratios may provide about the same tread width. 205 x .65 is 133. 215 x .6 is 129. Very close. The 215/60 will be just a bit wider. Go for it. The slightly larger circumference will lower rpm at speed as well. Not by much, but some.

For more info, google "Tire size".

Thanks for that info Renntag, it has helped me to understand alot more about tire sizes. I guess the Bridgestone Re960 AS are not availible in the 215/ 60/15 size either. They are discontinued and I can't get them here anymore....I am finding what another poster mentioned about not many companies seem to be offering 15 inch tires, and if they are it is only a couple sizes.

I was now thinking of a 215 /65 /15 or even a 215 /70 /15 if I could get away with it. I am not sure about it being able to fit on the front. I think I have about an inch and a half from the tie rod to the tire. It is close with the 205 65 15 that are on now. I sure would want to be positive that these would fit. I checked out the Miata wheel coverter. That is nice to have and helps to understand more...Thanks

Does anyone know the width of the w126 15 hole 15" flat faced aluminum rim? I see alot of brochures indicate a rim width between 5.5 to 7.5 and wonder where this style rim falls....

Tire should fit. The size you are looking at is close enough to the original that it should fit. A 205 to a 215 is not much of a change in size.

Thanks again...we are on our way to Costco in a few minutes to have some 215 70 15 put on, unless someone is quick enough to talk me out of it. I hope the 70 series is'nt too big. I had looked at 215 65 15 but the sidewall is not rated as high. The 70 series is a 97 and the 65 series is 92. I think this should fill the wheel wells up nice and hopefully have no contact with anything. I worry about those tie rods on the front but like Renntag says it is not much of a difference and I have at least an inch of room there. If it is only 10 millimeters wider than what I had (205's)that should be 5 mm on each side of the rim which should easily still clear.

We are going with the Pirelli p4 four season plus. They look good and the guy that works there says he has them on his car and loves them. Had to spend an extra 100 bucks for these over the Bridgestones but the bridgestones are no longer availible.
