15" W124 Rim on W123??

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Everyone,

I currently have stock 14" rims on my W123.

My friend has a summer set and a winter set of tires mounted on the Mercedes rims from his W124.

He said he tried to put them on a w123 once but the inside of the rim hit the caliper. I think spacers are needed plus longer lug nuts, but I'm not sure which size of either...Any ideas?

If anyone has tried to do this please let me know how it worked.

The part number on the W124 rim is: 1244001802

I'm sure you know, bigger rims will throw off your speedometer, I'm not sure if the rims are compatable, they may fit though

Different off set from W123 to W124.
They are still 5 x 112mm bolt circle. As for spacer, you only need roughly the difference in offset. But note that the spacer has to fit the hub center and also offer hub centering for the rim.

FWIW, there are Reproduction wheels in the proper offset for the W123 in 15" (maybe) and 16" diameter. check it out.

The offset is going to cause you problems.

The W124 wheels will have a higher offset (more towards the centerline of the car) than the W123 wheels, which tend to "stick out" more.

There are online wheel offset comparators - you just need to know the width and offset of each wheel.

This is why a spacer will work for W124/201 wheels on a W123, but not necessarily the other way.

Wheels here on Tire Rack.

I agree that hub-centric spacers combined with longer wheel bolts can overcome this situation, but I would seriously question the cost-effectiveness of buying 4 hub centric spacers and 20 new lug bolts for this application.

I think that if the OP really wants 15" wheels, he can buy aftermarket 15's with the correct offset and which use the factory wheel bolts, as you suggested.

Steve, I totally agree. However, the longer we walk this earth, the more people we have the pleasure of meeting that will a) not take sound advice, and b) wish to do things the hard way.

Perhaps someone considering spacers has a nice set of factory wheels and their only cost is spacers and bolts ? I still avoid spacers like the plague.
There are cars from the factory with spacers (rare), but for 99% of the rest of the market, its not the best plan.

Hi All,

I can get the set of summer tires and the set of winter tires for free. And since I need new tires it might be cheaper to get the spacers and lug nuts than to get 8 brand new tires....but 100 a piece just for the spacers...that seems like a lot! Does anyone else think so too?

Hmmmm........

Jetmugg 08-17-2010 03:31 PM

I think you can get a set of Eibach hub centric spacers for about $325 for a set of 4.

It's easy to see that "free" wheels and tires aren't much of a bargain if they don't fit your car.

We had those wheels on our '85 TD. They will bolt right on with no issues. His tires probably hit the caliper, not the wheel. He might have had some ultra wide tires on there. We had 205-60-15 tires. You will need the longer lug bolts. The 15" tires should now be a 60 series since your 14 tires are a 70 series.

Yes. especially when you can get a set of new wheels for 436$ that fit.

I am not really sure that a "tire" will ever be able to hit a caliper, ever. By design that is just impossible.

Typical caliper clearance areas are the inside of the rim, and the back of the face of the wheel.

Tire clearance is of concern to the strut, body, and other suspension components.

rrgrassi 08-17-2010 05:37 PM

How is the clearance for the tie rods?

Shouldn't be an issue at near stock tire widths.

MBeige 08-17-2010 05:44 PM

The W126 version of these wheels will fit the W123, but the W124 and W201 versions will not without spacers and longer bolts.

They are a slightly different design than the squarish W124 W201 versions, but otherwise are very similar.

DeliveryValve 08-17-2010 05:59 PM

Standard w123 Bundts have an offset of ET30.

1244001802 have an offset ET49. The Tie rod will definitely rub on the lip of this rim. My estimate, you will probably will have to start at a 15mm spacer and increase sizes to see what actually fits. A 20mm spacer would probably work, but I think it's just way too thick. Hub centrics would be much better, but still way too thick for my taste.
