I'm looking for the part number for an alloy rim for a 1988 W124. Specifically, a 300CE, although I don't think the coupe has a different rim than the sedan.

I know the rims changed for the 89 and forward W124's and the part number is different.

I want to be sure that the rim I am looking at is the correct part for a 1988 model.


Can anyone help me out?

Call the Parts Department at your local MB dealer. Be sure to have your VIN handly because the techs usually make sure they're providing car-specific information.

I tried that last week. Cold called the parts dept.
" What's the VIN?"
You have in your system. Car is seviced there.
"That's not available to me."

.....later....

Ok I have the VIN now (read VIN)
" I can't give that out over the phone. You need to pull the rim and read it off the back of the rim"

For anyone interested the part number for 86-88 W124 rims is
1244001802.
It also has these two stampings
6.5J X 15H2 (width and diameter)
and
ET49 (no clue)

For 89 - 94 W124 rims the part number is similar, but differrent:
1244010802.
(same set of numbers, different sequence!)

ET49 means the offset for the wheel is 49mm. The Owner's Manual shows the wheel size and offset, but not the Part No.

Armed with the correct part number, I ordered a set of 2 reconditioned rims this morning.

Another question. Was MB using donuts as spares in '88? I'm almost positive I had a brand new tire mounted on an original rim in the spare tire well when I bought the car in 2001. Never rotated the spare. Haven't checked pressure or looked in the well myself until recently and found an emergency rim in there. Brand new, but, I can't help thinking it was switched on me somewhere along the line.

Was a full size rim OE for the 88 W124?

If not, will a full size tire fit in the wheel well of the 124?

Since I will have a spare rim or 2 now, I'd like to keep a full size tire in the car if it'll fit.

dynalow, our oldest MB vehicle is a 1991 300CE and it has a full size spare wheel/tire that matches the other 4 wheels. So I presume your 1988 E-Class car had a similar set-up when new. Yes, a full size spare will fit in the spare tire well.

Hopefully you still have the large black plastic "luggage bowl" that secures the spare tire. Look under Spare Wheel in your Owner's Manual index to see an illustration of the luggage bowl.

The "15" hole rims were the same size on the W124 chassis. However, there were two different styles. The early cars had "rounded" holes, and 90-up cars got "squared" holes. I have seen mismatched sets on cars before.

There must be three, then, as the very earliest, i.e. '86, were forged but soon thereafter they were cast. Clearly the earliest are best.

Got the ebay rims a few weeks ago and had then put on the car. Then I took my origs. to a body shop friend and he sent them out. Had them mounted this morning.

Mercedes did NOT use a compact spare in ANY of the W124s.

If anyone is interested I have one brand new OEM 1244001802 that use to be my spare wheel, I also have the large plastic bowl used to secure the spare to the trunk.

so, the P/N for my 1989 260e are
1244010802.

the previous owner has my rims chromed, and they're all in pretty bad shape now. Looking to replace them with OEM, which i understand were painted.

any suggestions on where to find at good price?

Well, I guess you could keep looking on ebay or CL or try local salvage yards.

FWIW, I have two originals from my car I no longer need. (88 CE). They need to be repainted. But the rims are decent. Some minor curb rash, not too bad. #1244001802. pics avail.

Also check www.car-part.com The site is run by Hollander ( the parts interchange people ) Enter your car info and the part you are looking for, a list of salvage yards that have your part will appear. With a little bit of effort you can get a good idea what other years / models used the same part and sometimes a part number, it is not 100% accurate but good enough to get a idea what is going on.

Calling the dealer / auto parts store for a part number is poor form. . .

Just looking at prices, and possible conditions of these wheels, I'm now wondering if I should just my current wheels restored. Previous owner had them chromed, and now all the chrome is peeling or peeled. Probably a restore with paint would do the trick.

Anyone recommend a wheel restorer in Northern California that I can get a quote from? I'm not in a place where I can DIY.
