On my 1977 240D the manual says to rotate the radial tires front to back and back to front but to keep them always on the same side. More modern rear wheel drive cars call for a front to back and crossing pattern so that the tires eventually operate in all positions. I wonder whether the original 1977 rotation instruction has been overtaken by better quality radial tires and/or more up-to-date knowledge about tires in general. Bottom line to my question is whether today one should keep to the 1977 instruction about rotation.

With modern tires the front to back rotation is no longer correct. The proper rotation is rear to front and cross the fronts to the back.

Thanks ,Luke

If you havve directional tires that are all the same size you rotate your tires front to back on the same side of the car.
Thanks, Luke

I think that the old 175R14 tires I was discussing were not single directional. They were regular Continentals. The were fitted to some Volvos of that period as well. I conclude that the modern rotation pattern is now appropriate. Thanks for the advice.
