O.K. so I do the Sportline suspension switch, now what about wheels and tires, I am not interested in wearing a kidney belt so 18" is out of the question, I like the fat tire look so what size(s) will give the
best of all worlds,& not rub on the inner wells.
Thanks, Chris C.

I've got a '88 300TE that I did a +1 upgrade on....went from the 196/65-15 to 205/55-16 on 16 X 7.5 wheels. As I understand it, I also could have gone to a 225/50-16, which I plan to do as soon as these tires wear out. A +1 will adversely affect your ride quality somewhat, but I felt it was a good trade-off for the superior performance. Biggest gains were in transient response and turn-in; both much, much improved.

I'd caution you on a +2, however...you may need that kidney belt. Good luck!

Chris,
Wide as you can go with a regular W124 (non 500E/E500) is 225/50/16 or 25/45/17. I'd recommend staying away from the 17's for obvious ride penalties, higher costs, and them not helping handling over the 16's. Unless you have done lots of super aggressive suspension work the suspension will not be able to take full advantage of the 17's.

225/50/16 gives you lots of tire choices, fits in the stock fenders without rubbing, and transforms the handling of the car. If you like the fat tire look it is as wide as it gets for most W124's. Ordering wheels and tires at once gives you the most bang for your buck. Give Tirerack a ring or click. They should be able to give you further advice, confirm fittment choices, etc.

Hope this helps...Lee
