560 SEL tire selection
Any thoughts out there on the best tires for my 1991 560 SEL. I drive 100 highway miles per day, and favor a crisp, responsive, all season tire (live in NJ) in either the stock (205/65/15) or upgraded (215/60/15) size. Probably favor a V rated although interested in any thoughts on a good H rated tire.
Much appreciated. J.Chip |

I recently recommended the Dunlop SP Sport A2 for a couple of friends cars - an 88 Oldsmobile Cutlass and a '87 560 SEL. They both appear to be pleased with the tire.
The A2 is a relatively new H-rated all-season tire with a 50K mile tread wear warranty that is quite aggressively priced, and it's available in the 205/65R-15 OEM size for your SEL. This size is speced at 823 revs/mile. The 215/60 is 832 and the 225/60 is 817. If you want to go with a sixty series, I recommend the 225/60 since it's closer to OEM in revs per mile (they'll increase with tread wear) and it has greater load capacity. Your OEM seven inch wide wheels are sufficiently wide for a 225/60, and I don't expect you'll have any clearance isssues, but I'm not sure. Dunlop has been a price leader for some time. They don't have the brand name recognition of Michelin, Goodyear and some other brands, so they price very aggressively and make good tires. Dunlop was purchased by Sumitomo in the eigthies, but Goodyear bought the Dunlop brand (and various assets) from Sumitomo about two or three years ago. I have 225/60 MXV4 HRs on the SDL. I can't say that they have more stick in dry or less stick in wet compared to the 205/665 MXV4 HRs it had previously. I've tried both sets on the SE as well and I can't tell a difference there either. No clearance problems.
