For the smoothest riding 235/45/17 tires under $150 should I stick with the 8000's or should I consider something else?
Thanks. ------------------ Mike 90 560SEL 17" Alba Frontiers Clear corners Clear taillights Limo tint 2 12" Kicker XPL's |

take a serious look at the Potenza RE730's (smoother better ride quality and also better performance) and the SP Sport 9000's (maximum performance and nice ride). The SP Sport 8000's are harsh riding and noisey.

Recently spoke to a Dunlop engineer who plainly stated that SP9000s are Dunlop's top hi-perf tires in the wet yet SP8000s, despite their age, is still the highest performance Dunlop tires in the dry. Period. I personally don't care about 'harshness' or 'noise' and why wonder so many people use these as criteia when they buy tires. No MBZ will ride that harsh even w/ 'harsh' tires, and when you turn on the stereo, tire noise, usually insignificant to begin with, is non-issue. I want the highest perfoming/longest lasting, not soft comfy made-for-grandpa, tires for my $. Tony |

I have owned two sets of SP8000 and one set of SP9000. The 8000 is quieter than the 9000 and both ride about the same. The 8000 is far better than the 9000 in the dry but not as good in the wet. I would not buy the 9000 again.

I got the SP 5000's because the treadwear rating was so much higher. My 8000's only lasted 7-8000 miles. The 5000's ride better than the 8000's but theres not much difference.

I agree, I'd also try looking at a 245/45/17. I think they'd clear your fender. As for tires:
Dunlop SP Sport 5000 Asymmetrical: $130 Great wear, nice balance, and all-season as well. Bridgestone Potenza RE730: $140 Great Wet, Great Dry, Great ride, Great Value Dunlop SP Sport 9000: $185 Great Wet, Great ride, Decent wear for a Max Performance Tire as well My Pic. Either the Dunlop 5000 or the Bridgestone RE730 (depends if All-Season and better wear is really that important to you) ------------------ Chirag (Charlie) Patel - 99 Mercedes-Benz ML 430 V8 w/custom TV, Video, UHF, speaker system - 93 190E 2.6 (4-sale) w/ an amp, equalizer, and CD-changer, integrated w. stock stereo for integrated cellular phone speaker system - had a 93 190E m103 3.2, 5-speed trans, - had a 88 300E 2.6 - had a 84 300TD w/275k+ miles - 2002 S500/S600 - Maybe in a little more then a year [This message has been edited by Chiragp (edited 10-19-2000).] |
