Spare rim
I just noticed today when checking my brake pads that the wheel on front passenger side of my 240D is actually the spare tire wheel, and the wheel that my spare tire is on is a regular one. I think i could use a new spare anyway, it looks used and i wouldn't really trust it. Would it be worth it to switch that tire on to the regular rim, and put the new spare on the spare wheel? the spare wheel looks heavier, with less ventillation.

I think so, esp. since you're only talking about $10-$15.

I'll have to check for sure, but I was almost positive that all five wheels on my 240D were the same. It's been awhile since I did it, but I'm pretty sure I rotated the spare into my tire rotation sequence when the car was new. Am I having a senior moment?

My 84's spare was rotated onto the car, the last guy caught a curb so he put on the new looking rim and stuck the bad looking one in the trunk. While there isn't much tread on it, it is nice to see a newer tire than the old conti that my 83 features on its spare. All of my rims appear the same on my 300d, well especially after all got a new coat of paint.

Jeff, off-topic but I noticed the '83 in your sig doesn't have "For Sale" next to it anymore...did you change your mind, or did it not sell?

Maxwell,
I don't know of any MB that had a different rim for the spare tire. You probably just have mismatched set of wheels. If the size and the offset of the odd rims is the same, the rims can be used interchangably. If different, the odd rim should be used only intermittently as a spare. Or find another rim that is the same as the other 4. P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 08-22-2003 at 11:30 PM. |

Well it went for $3650 on ebay, but after the guy won the auction decided to start asking questions about the car. He also didn't take into consideration of going 1700miles to come get it, and the time/money involved in driving it back. He backed out, and at the sametime I decided to keep it. While I LOVE the color of my 84, I think I'm just going to sell it instead. I'll try locally first. The 83 has a more expressway-able gear ratio in it anyway. I've already put the euros on the 83, I'm just getting everything into perfect shape right now. Within the next month I hope to have every single thing on it working perfectly, which it is close to right now.

Re: wheels
Those are a mismatch. Bought an '83 240d for parts, and noticed after the newer series steel wheels on it. Noticably lighter than the old ones.

The odd rim is the same size same tire as the others, and the hubcap fits right, just it is a different style, it doesn't have the holes, just a couple slits.

Maxwell,
The wheels with the slits are wheels from older MB. Did you check the offset? That's the distance from the center of the rim (halfway between the tire flanges) to the mounting surface (section of rim that mounts against the brake drum or rotor). P E H |
