W202 sport alloys on 95 E420

W202 sport alloys on E420

Greetings,

Recently purchased a complete set of 7J15H2 OEM wheels from a C230K with the intention of upgrading my 1995 E420. For reference, these are polished eight-hole wheels that came with the W202 sports option (A 202 401 16 02). Discovered that all W124 front discs were not created equal (25.4mm vs older 22.4mm), and that correct fitment was not an option.

I find myself one month after the purchase with a lovely set of OEM wheels that do not fit. To make matters worse, the original issue that prompted the purchase (bent rim) has degraded ride quality even further. One of the few people other than myself who works on the E420 recommended H&R spacers to bring the offset back into compliance.

Call it a philosophical difference, but spacers are down at the bottom of my list. Hypothetically.. what would be involved in correcting the W202 wheel offset (E37) to make this work? A 5mm H&R spacer brings it back to 42mm (W124 Sportline spec), but I am not even sure that would work. Any advice from those in the know is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Just for clarification.
If you have an ET of 37 and add a 5 mm spacer, your ET will now be 32.
Lower ET numbers move the wheel OUT further.

manny, appreciate the correction. I freely confess that I did not have a firm understanding of offset correction (nor the local mechanic, apparently 8^)

Sounds like its time to re-post that classified ad. Does anyone have a recommended 16-inch (7/7.5) wheel that fits the W124 400E/E420? Dealership wheel brochure has some sharp-looking (IMHO) contenders like the AMG Style II, but none in a 16-inch form. I hear Alutec among others fab the AMG wheels anyhow...

Cheers, DM.

Last time I looked, there was no AMG in 16".
They all seem to be 17 or 18, which I don't care for, for the simple fact that you have to. run some pretty low aspect ratio tires (i.e. 50/ 45 series, or even 40, can you say crappy ride ? ), to keep the speedo happy.
I run 16x7.5 Borbet Type E, with 215/55/16 tires.
You may want to go to tirerack.com and see what they have for your car.
Then there is also the replicas.
www.bekkers.com, & others.
Happy shopping.
