If Michilin tires are so great, how come they don't have a road hazard warranty?

My daughter had a new set of Michilin winter tires, not cheap ones: $100 each, and spit one side wall on a pot hole. It wasn't enough to bend the rim, but tire was ruined even though it was a very small cut

She took it back to the tire shop and they would do nothing but sell her another new one. Tire had less than 1000 miles on it. She, unlike me, was stupid enough to buy another Michilin after they screwed her on the first one.

I don't know of any manufacture that covers sidewall cuts due to potholes. If you know one let me know
Now if you buy a road hazard insurance from the tire store that sold you the tire you might have something there.

I wanted to buy Michelin MXV 4 plus but I chose cheaper Falken ZE-512's at Sears. I purchased $6 road hazard for each tire.

Since the purchase in January, I had side wall damage twice. The wheel was not damaged. Each time, I payed $6 for new road hazard for the new replacement tire.

At the second time of side wall damage, I thought "Oh, should I have bought Michelin's? Had it been a Michelin, its sidewall have not been damaged?"

Continental does offer road hazzard on their tires and we also offer an aftermarket road hazzard program ........

I quit using them years ago because of that very problem. They have always had weak side walls, and they have kept from improving that so the ride was smoother.

I've had Michelin MXV4's in the past, and on the rear of my car right now actually and have not run into any problems thus far. And keep in mind PA is the pothole capital of the United States .

I'm not discounting anyone's experience but I figured I'd atleast propose the alternate view.

I will agree and disagree in the same post.

I disagree that Michelin makes a bad tire. My experience has indicated that they make tires that are head and shoulders above ANY other tire made.

That said, I don't buy them anymore. They have gotten too expensive and there are now alternatives that use the excellent construction methods that have been used exclusively by Michelin until recent years. These alternatives are not up to Michelin quality, but they balance out well, run smooth at speed and last a long time.... for less money.

I just don't buy 'em any more.

In opinion, any tire that that is rendered unuseable by a pothole type road hazard that does not damage or bend the rim is not designed properly for the use it is intended.

And for a tire company to not replace an improperly designed tire that has failed is unconscionable. Probabaly they do it because they know their tires are improperly designed and don't want to pay for their errors because they would loose too much money.

The way I read your road hazard warranty, its not worth much either because it lasts only 3 years and not the reasonable life of the tire.

Have you tried a claim against your Roads Authority ?
Many cities, counties, states will pay for damages caused by potholes, especially " unmarked " ones.

Several years ago, I was parking my new 328i, I hit the curb, which was made of stone with very sharp edges. To me it was a very, very slight hit, but it cut up the tire and the even scraped the wheel. I almost kicked myself for doing it. I did not complain to Continental Tire for making inferior tires because it was my negligence. Tire companies cannot be held resonsible for driver's negligence just as the camera companies cannot be held reposible if you dropped and broke your camera. No tires for consumer use can be designed and made indestructible. I think we are expecting too much when we feel manufacturer should stand behind their products even though the products have been used negligently.

I can see hitting a curb is abusing yuor tires, but not hitting a pothole in the road. Tire companies have to design their tires to withstand normal use, and around here that is hitting potholes. So Michilin should replace any tire that doesn't stand up to this normal use if they can't design a tire that does.

Michilin did neither.

I thought they all did for the life of the tread down to 2/32 inch, anyway. Sears used to, but I don't know if they do anymore.

I rarely buy new tires any more, I have a good source of more used tires than I can wear out.

I still think it is rotten that Michlin didn't replace my daughter's tire. She won't buy any more Michilins and I hope a lot of others on this site won't either.

Personally, I would never purchase used tires. I value my safety too much to trust in someone else's discards.

As far as used tires go, don't you have used tires on your car now?

CLK 55AMG: Is that a 5.5 liter supercharged V8 in a C class MB? That must be a rocket. How did they stuff that big engine in that small car. Must be hard to work on the engine.
