Front Tire Blowout
My parents were driving my car on the freeway and the front driver side tire blew up. Luckily everything was ok and they were able to pull over and replace with the spare. They said that the inner part of the tire is where the tire came apart. I need some suggestions as to what caused this and what the best course of action is.
Could it have been under/overinflated? I had just checked and corrected all tire pressures about 2-3 weeks ago. I do remember hitting some pretty bad pot holes in the road, but could that have damaged the tire? The tires only have 15-20k miles on them, so there was plenty of tread left. Could it have been that the load rating of the tires was not great enough for the weight of the car(as we've heard from Tire Rack)? Could it be too much negative camber from the lowering springs? Would MRP's adjustable plates solve this problem? Could it have been a defect in the tire? I'm worried to keep these tires on the car if something like this could happen again. Sorry for the long post, but this type of thing brings up lots of questions. Thanks in advance. Edit My specs are 17 x 7.5" wheels, Dunlop SP 9000 215/40/17 tires, Eibach Pro kit springs, and Bilstein HD shocks

By far the most likely cause was underinflation, not necessarily at the time of the blow out. If it ran at speed underinflated at a previous time it could easily cause eventual failure.
Check tire pressure at least monthly and give them a visual check every time before you get in the car. How long does it take to walk around the car? 10 seconds? Best of luck, |

sounds like an alignment problem to me ... too much negative camber would cause excessive inside wear

Over the years I've had four tires from two different sets where the outer cord delaminated from the casing. I don't neglect my tires and keep them silghtly overinflated by 4 pounds. I guess it just happens sometimes.
