sorry for asking but another dumb tire question

gonna buy a pair of new tires for my benzo 300D 78. The best tire that i can find that local shops around town can supply are Pirelli p3000...are these tires pretty good?

I know i have been reading around forum posts on tires and upgrades.. most off yall recommend Michi MXV4's or Yoki Avids. Those tires are hard to find in my area so those are out of the question.

BTW: still sticking to the original 195/70/14 with bunt cake rims...i still like those...well...until i can shell out a good 1000.00 for a great set of wheels---> maybe 205/55/16 are great in the future.

muybweno,

Not being a fan of Pirelli tires, I would have a difficult time endorsing your selection. I buy my tires from TireRack, and have them mounted locally. TireRack will identify a nearby shop they recommend for this if you need to find a shop willing to mount and balance a set of tires you did not buy from them, or one that has a suitable set of tools to do the job properly with alloy wheels. Good luck, Jim

i would say, get them! i just bought them and so far so good. i hhavebt had them for long but i like them alot and them have the highest tread rating of all the ones at discount. but i say get them. if you go to discount tires web site and read the ratings from customers, pirelli rate the best.

You say a pair? are you going to mix them with another brand. I sure have found MB's to be tire senitive. I now have avid touring on my cars and like them a lot........

WRogers,

I mix all four wheels with different brands and have no problems.

MUY,

I wouldn't recommend Pirelli tires because I had a belt slip on one of them and would not replace it under warranty.

muybweno,

Like PEH, I have had poor experiences with Pirellis, twice. Same basic experience but I will admit it was a long time ago. At one point Pirelli made a tire called a CN36, which was highly rated. I put it on a 1983 MB 230E and in 10,000 miles could not keep the tires balanced. The verdict was a slipped belt. No help from Pirelli. Then, my 1986 190E 2.3-16 arrived from the factory with P6000 tires. Same issue. After less than 6,000 miles, at over 70 mph the tire would not stay balanced. Belt slip or tread separation. I have not owned a Pirelli product since.

I have had the opposite experience with Michelin. But they are not the only decent tire around. I have had basically good experiences with Goodyear (in their higher performance tires) and Dunlop. The Dunlop tires just did not last (SP 8000 and similar) more than 20,000 miles so their initial price benefit was not worth the "total ownership" cost of the tires compared to Michelin, for me.

At any rate, look at the cost of the tire and mounting from TireRack. If you want a lot more data, post this on the "Wheels and Tires" or whatever it is called group on this site. Good luck, Jim

well i need the tires really bad because in fear of messing up the front end tire rods and center links...it really rattles hard at more than 70+mph. and Also is likes to sway left and right as speeds of about 20-25? i dont know what the deal is with that...i hope its just a tire issue too.

From discount tire CO. this is what they can offer me

Goodyear: conquest, integrity, comfort tread, triple tread

Dunlops: SP sport A2

Michelin: destiny

BFGoodrich: Precept touring

out of all these tires, which one you you now recommend?
order is listed from lowest price to highest price...being 80.00 per tire as the highest..

thanks for all your guys help

muybweno,

I am not familiar with your tire choices, however, not to beat a dead horse, if you go to www.tirerack.com and do a little navigating you can get to a feedback bulletin board type page from owners of tires. Not sure if there will be a lot of data on the ones you are looking at, but they are usually pretty good. And there is a summary section with ratings. Jim

alright!!! you guys sold me on the Yoki avids. i guess patiens is a virtue when i does come to tire tread wear and performance. I will still be ordering them from a local shop since i desparately need them to reduce excessive wear on my tie rods; plus they would cost just as much as it would from tirerack with shipping included.

wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great input..

I guess i will only be buying Yokahamas or Michelin from now on on these heavy 300D's

WRogers,

I keep a lot of steel between my tires to keep them apart.
