Wheel painting

Just to share my experience...

I just got another SD, 1982 and the wheels looked horrible, faded, bare in spots, etc.

I bought 2 new tires and took one wheel and carefully sanded it while dismounted. Used 120 grit to start, finished with 400.

Painted with Duplicolor silver wheel paint, finished with their clear. The end result looks great! About 3 or 4 coats of each did the trick.

On the other 3 wheels, I masked with duct tape, left them on the tires, cleaned with greased lightning, sanded as above and wiped with acetone and painted the same way, moving the car a time or two to get rotation. The end result was killer and has held up nicely for a month now with several washings.

For 10 bucks a wheel, they look new.

I redid my wheels with duplicolor paint in 1992 and they looked just fine when I took them off in 2002 to put on new 15 inch rims (14's were standard only on the 84 190's).

Question

This is something I would like to try!

Can you tell me the color #'s of the Duplicolor paint that you used to match the original?

They make a special paint for wheels. I used the silver special wheel paint. It is available at the usuals (walmart, kmart, etc.).

I understand that the old Wurth paint was a better match, but I'm not sure they even make it anymore, and, even if they did, it is substantially more expensive.

Be carefull, I used their wheel paint on a set of wheels and it came out much to dark.
Recently I did these. wheels and used the Duplicolor Silver M. Looks very close
I also used the Gray bumper paint for the bumpers and side mouldings....
Get the big cans and be sure they are from the same lot number..

Shark1007

I too repainted my stock alloy wheels silver and added several coats of clear to finish.

After I refinished them in the Spring of last year they looked like new, but I noticed this past February that there were a million cracks that had formed from what I think is contraction, or shrinkage of either the silver paint, or maybe the clear!

I bought the same kind of paint you did from AutoZone.

If I have to do it again, this time I will use my spray gun and better quality paint.

Stuff that comes out of a spray can does'nt seem to hold up very well. Maybe formulas have changed to meet clean air acts.
