1984 300TD, 165K, $800obo (IL)
Anyone interested in an '84 300TD? I was going to resurrect this car myself, but seeing as it's taken me 6 months just to get the rusty rear hatch replaced (!), I don't think a complete resto is in the cards for me anytime soon. The car runs and drives, but is rusty... rockers, rear wheel arches, drivers door bottom, etc... She's solid as a driver, but definitely rusty. Interior is actually pretty darned nice.
I bought this car in Chicago last January and drove it home 3+ hours with no problems at all. To make it a daily driver, it'll need two last things: someone cut hydro lines to the rear suspension, so they need spliced and flared (or new line sections brazed in). Second, there is an exhaust leak at the flex section in the downpipe. Not terribly noisy, just a bit annoying. The windows all worked back in January, but a couple don't now. I'd try cleaning the switches before I replaced any regulators or anything, though. Needs some fiddling with things like the throttle linkage, and the hood doesn't always want to latch just right (needs realigned, I suspect)... the usual little quirks we live with in these cars. I just don't have the time to commit to this car that I'd like to. I am going to look for a rust-free MB diesel instead... any reasonable offer considered. I can snap some pics if anyone can post them for me or explain to me how to do so. Car is in Charleston, IL. Thanks! Chris

Still got it...
Sorry for the delayed response... I am out of town for a couple of weeks. Shoud be home this weekend! Yes, I still have the car. Haven't been too aggressively trying to sell it until I get home, though. She was going to head to Ebay if no one here was interested. Email me if you have any questions or want to see a couple pics!

Euro lights, too...
Just thought I'd add that I picked up a pair of euro headlights for my car that can be included in the sale. I was in France, so I visited a couple of junkyards and found a decent pair. One needs the reflective cup for the headlight either cleaned, replaced, or repainted with reflective material, but the glass is all good.
Feel free to make offers or inquiries... she's gotta go! I just don't have time to do this car justice. Tks, Chris

Last call
Going once... going twice...
Car's gotta go. She needs a new home ASAP to make room for a newer car for winter. If no one wants to make an offer in the next week or so, she's going to Ebay. I'd much rather a mercedesshopper get her! Tks, Chris

Chris:
Is the car still available? I'd be interesed in knowing how well the engine runs, how many miles on the engine and how much oil consumption it would have in 3k miles? thanks diesel don

Chris--it's Joe Bauers from Champaign. Might be interested as a parts car for my wagon, if for nothing else. Let me know if it's still available and when I could have a look.
my email: j.bauers@insightbb.com Thanks. Joe |

Hi Joe!
Hey Joe -- you've got dibs, buddy. I owe you many favors over for your kindness over the past couple of years.
To answer a few questions, the engine runs VERY well at 165K miles, and starts pretty easily in cold weather, too, so I'd assume compression is very good. As I have only had it for about 200 miles of driving (enough to get it home and start fiddling with it) I have no idea on oil consumption. There is a transmission rebuild receipt in the glove box, so I assume it's been tended to for some reason. The only running concern I have is with the throttle linkage. There is a note in the glovebox from a previous mechanic noting the throttle needs adjusted; the car starts off fine (plenty of power), but seems to need the pedal held further to the floor than should be necessary to maintian highway speeds (but it did 65+ mph just fine the whole way home). I have not ventured too far into the linkage to try tending to it myself. She's gotta go ASAP! Chris
