Crazy late night idea: Trade my 300D for a VW, or Volvo?

I want another VW.
I picked up an 86 Cabriolet for my wife-to-be last week and it's even worse, I really, really want another VW.

I want an A1 Jetta Turbo Diesel, which is not going to happen. I'd take any A1 or A2 Jetta, preferably diesel, but maybe a 16V or something interisting, or a nice Scirocco. It would have to be very clean, very un-rusty and so on and so forth, but I'd swap my 300D for it.

Anyone have a stash of old VW's sitting around doing nothing?

Or Volvo's for that matter, the 240's, especialy wagons are really growing on me..

You want a VW! Have I gota deal for you!

Wolfwalker,

How about a matching VW convertable? I have a 1982 VW Rabbit convertable with 149K miles that I have owned sinces 1982 and 3000 miles. 5 speed and the AC works!

Door Handles

W.W.,

I'm just curious(you've got 16x s the V.W. ownership experience I have)
how many of their "pot metal" [interor mechanical workings] door handles
have you replaced?

In my 82 VW convertable with 140K miles, that I owned since 1983, with mannual window cranks, I have replaced 2. The pot metal broke on one and the plastic broke on the other.

None really. Most of mine had the plastic interiosr handles, which I tend to replace with nice older chrome steel pieces when I run across them, never had one break. Replaced lots of outside door handles, well, two or three sets anyway. If there lubed and you mind how you snatch on them they last well.
There is such a thing as a solid steel chrome external handle, but there hard to find that don't need re-chroming.

old ones were pretty good

I had one of the first 83 GTI's in NC. I drove the pee out of it for 170K, autocrossing, 4K at 80mph on the highway forever... Very few repairs on it. I think the aux air valve (choke), clutch, and an alternator was it besides the tuneup stuff.

There's just something about them.

Sad part is a little GTI would likely cost less fuel wise than my 300D right now.

Just after the last big storm that came up the east coast this season.
Water never got any higher thankfully.

I've had at least 13 VWs in my time. My son was driving one when he had a van turn right in front of him. Folded up pretty good. Wife was driving one when guy ran stop sign and tried to drive across her hood. That one we drove home and to the shop that found everything had shifted 6 inches to the right. Front motor mount was turned sideways. It did drive real funny. Daughter was driving her 123 when she took on a full sized pickup and won. The 123 is still on the road. I have decided I like that extra 500 pounds of German steel protecting them.

I've had an experience or two like that myself, no doubt the MB is safer, not to mention it's much less squirly in the rain. But while I'm still young enough to enjoy it, I'd really like another car or two that will actually zip through corners and smile at being tossed around. I'll have more MB's, no doubt.
