FS 1982 240D in Iowa
After some debate, the 1982 240D goes up for sale. I needed a car I can tow and I can't with the 240D. I purchased this car in Florida 5 yrs ago when it had 90K put on by the 1st owner. It now has 149K and has been my daily driver. I have serviced it faithfully every 2500-3000 mi and kept a log. She's in excellent condition and has no rust. When I purchased it, I knew the left front fender had been replaced. with French steel and I finally replaced it last summer with a super clean, German made, Arizona fender. I also fixed, with welded steel, a couple typical weak spots. The paint is in excellent condition. The interior is also excellent. There are two 1" cracks on the dash that are easily fixed. Seats are excellent as are the carpets. Driver's side door trim on the post needs work. Oringinal radio, but the antenna needs a new power strip. The antenna motor works. Power locks are not working due to a vacuum leak. The engine is excellent, but I will tell you that it uses 1 qt of oil per thousand miles and always has. I knew this when I purchased it by visiting with the German mechanic who knew the car and he like the fact that it did. Transmission and clutch are smooth and tight.
Things I've done to it: motor mounts, drive shaft center bearing, put in right side mirror, replaced heat valve, regular valve adjustments, changed trans and rear end oil, new battery-brakes-rotors, new glow plugs, etc. All glass is in good shape with the windshield showing 23 yrs of road time. This is a nice one fellas and I hope the pictures will do it justice. Is this car worth $6000?? I am also advertising locally. I think it might be worth $6k on Ebay if it's truly as described, but you'd be hard-pressed to sell it here at that price. My opinion, of course. Sounds like a beautiful car, though; wish I could afford it! Good luck with the sale!

At this point before pictures it might help "the Folks" to know that it's white with the blue bentex interior.

I started this baby up this morning after sitting for week, at 7 degrees, and without plugging it in. (TDI is in the garage now)
I asked you guys if $6,000 was about right and got little response. I'd be happy to email some pictures to those wo have a sincere interest and then tell me what it's worth. |

I think it's way over priced for being in the rust belt now for 5yrs.
I also don't think it's good to use a qt of oil every 1,000mi |

Given the description, this car is worth approimately $2,500-$4,000. The killer here is the previous presence of rust, vaccum leak, and oil consumption. To the right buyer, it very well may fetch slightly over $4,000. However, given the market you are in (I am originally from Iowa) the price trends slightly downward due to demand. I have found that diesel Mercedes seem to be most in demand in the Southeastern part of the US with prices trending slightly higher.
I would recommend some pricing research on cars.com and autotrader.com. Anyway, best of luck and I hope you find good buyer.

This car has used the same amount of oil all its life, according to the German mechanic that serviced it the first 90K and from my own experience the last 60K. I think the primary issue here with the oil use is that we Americans tend to think there is something wrong with the engine when some use occurs. Many others have felt to the contrary.
Undercoat is still in excellent condition. It was that cheap French steel front fender and which was not properly undercoated that caused problems. I've hand washed it weekly. Has anyone ever held a German and French fender at the same time and noticed the weight difference? I asked if $6,000 was about right. If the market and/or the forum tell me it will only bring $4,000 or less, I'd be a fool to get rid of this one. |
