Any interest in a 1988 420SEL, for $5k?
Their is a used car lot down the street from me with a decent looking 420SEL on the lot. They are asking $5k but it has been for sale for awhile now I bet you could get them down. Maybe even to $3,500-$4,000.
It is silver I think the interior is ox blood? I don't remember the exact mileage I think about 140k. I just looked at it fast, but overall the paint and body are nice, no major dents or marks. I think with a buffing the paint would look pretty sharp. No rust visiable by walking around the car. The interior looks pretty clean as well. If anyone is interested I would be willing to go over it and see if it is worth buying.

Funny you should mention the 420.
Here in my town, there is a 420SEL that has been for sale for about 18 months. It's color is a brilliant white and the price is now down to $3800. I never bothered to look it over carefully, but, it also appears to show well. It just seems that they don't make much of an effort to sell it. |

No the gas ones sit their are tons of them and the market isn't that strong. An SDL on the other hand probably wouldn't sit on the lot.
I may just go look at it for the heck of it. I have never driven a 420 and since it is a dealer I wouldn't mind wasting their time. It looks like a clean car though if someone could get it for $3k it probably would make a very nice ride.

Wonder if it gets 22 on the highway???? The SDL is only getting 27 overall right now. Cost of fuel versus gasoline powered equivalent: just about the same |

420SEL owners say they get low 20's on the highway and high teens around town.
If my SDL didn't come along when it did I probably would have bought a 420/560SEL. You can get a lot more W126 for your money with a gas engine. Not to mention MB builds a good gas engine that will probably last just as long as a diesel. With diesel at $2.18 and premium at $2 I would be ahead with a 420 now because I am only getting about 22mpg. If you had $10k to spend on a W126 you could buy a very nice 300SDL with say 100k on the clock. Or you could buy a 4 year newer 560SEL with well under 100k on it. My next W126 will be gas. The same goes for the W140's and W210's. People pay crazy premiums to get the diesel. Unless you really want a diesel why pay $22.5k for a W210 with 160k miles on it? You could be one 4 years newer with half the mileage in E320 form. Not to mention the V6 is probably cheaper to maintain because the heads won't ever have to come off to remove the glow plugs.

I owned a PRISTINE 86 420SEL.. Black/Ox Blood.. great car, great power. A gasser 126 is nice, but there is nothing like a diesel. Gassers require more maint' as a general rule. Don't expect much in the way of fuel economy, either.

Hard to sell though, no interest so far on a pretty decent looking 420 you could probably buy for $3,500.

I sure see alot of 420 SEL's running around here in Austin, plus a some 560's. But most of what I see here on the highways and on the streets are the infamous 123's....300D Turbo Diesels.
