1987 300 SDL for sale, Nashville Area

Smoke silver metallic, maroon leather with sheepskin seat covers, 217,000 miles. Car was originally purchased in Kansas City, then the original owners retired to Arizona where they sold the car to their son, who was a MB service technician. I bought the car from him in March of 2003 with 202,000 miles on it. The transmission was weeping a bit, so I had that fixed at German Car in Phoenix. While it was there, I had the high-pressure power steering hose replaced on the shopowner's recommendation. The car has no rust, although there is a bit of oxidation on the trunk lid. The body is straight and has the original equipment wheels. The sunroof, tilts up but doesn't open due to misaligned or broken guide mechanism. The sunroof motor itself is fine. There is a small separation of a seam in the leather at the top of the rear seat near the rear dash. I plan to have the airconditioning vent actuators fixed at the discretion of the buyer - I've been quoted approximately $150 for the job. The air blows cold, but it's all up the defrost vents and the console vents for the rear. That's it for the "downs".

The engine starts no matter how long it's been sitting, runs smoothly, shifts perfectly, and returns 27 mpg on the highway. All the lights and electronics work, including the clock. The vacuum locking system works perfectly, as do the power seats on both sides. The stereo/cassette is the original Becker unit. I've run Shell Rotella with Wix filters on the recommendation of the previous owner. The car comes with the Mercedes Engine Manual, Chassis and Body Manual, and the Maintenance Manual - all but the transmission manual. I replaced the front brake pads just a few months ago with Bendix semi-metallic. The brakes are strong and stop straight.

I'm asking $5500 for the car and can drive it a reasonable distance from Nashville to show it to a serious potential buyer.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I borrow the neighbor's camera!

Any bites yet?

Bump to the top, for another Nashville guy.

I saw your ad in the paper. Any action? Hope so.

I believe each of these cars are the final production year for that model.

Thanks Clay. No, no action yet. I figured the Tennessean would be worthless and it has been. Do you (or anyone else) think my price is out of line? I'm back in town and will soon post up pics so guys can give me better feedback.

Addtionally, if anyone has any other tips for selling this car, I'd appreciate it. I like the "Trader" series of publications, but it's not available in Tennessee. I was thinking of TraderOnline and Wheels and Deals. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Bill

the scene?

Yeah Nashville, the scene is everywhere...they only seem to have a few cars each week lately though.

Bill,

Can’t really give you much advice about the value of your car, other than what I have learned reading posts here. If it’s really nice and rust free, and has at least some records, I don’t think your price is bad. It has been observed here that while we all have a great interest in these cars, that may be because we are “concentrated” here, and the market in general is not as impressed.

I just sold a 2002 Impala LS Sport with less than 30K miles here in Nashville. This was just a beautiful car, but it was the fourth one in my 2-driver household. Besides I was really enjoying driving the 240D (OK, I am crazy and all my friends and family just shake their heads. At least my little girls love riding in “The D” as they call it).

I started selling it in the Tennessean, which also automatically puts it up at cars.com and The Scene, I think. Got a very few calls, but they were all low-baller’s. I thought the paper was too much $ for an ad and was not happy with the results.

Took a bunch of nice pic’s and posted a “run till you sell ad” at AutoTrader.com. I think I had it for sale for about 3 months total, with very few hits. Finally sold it to the first serious guy who called. He was from the middle of nowhere Alabama. His wife had fallen in love with the pictures and he bought it for her as a present. They came to pick it up and were just the nicest young couple and loved the car. I got about $2K more than the dealer would give me and they paid about $2K less than the dealer was selling similar cars for (according to them).

Bottom line, price it for what you believe it’s worth, take some quality pictures and post it on the net, and be patient. There is an A$$ for every seat, and I mean that in the best possible way. You’ll of course know you have a good deal when everyone walks away happy.

Send me a PM if you want me to come have a look or talk more about my experiences. I live in West Meade, close to Bellevue.

Clay
