Thank you, it is a very nice car. I'm not sure myself on the transmission. The guy that did the transmission looked up the S/N and told me it was a transmission option. I took his word for it. He has been rebuilding automatic transmissions for BMW and Mercedes for 35 years.
I've also been told that 1969 was the last year that Merecedes' were hand built, but by a not so reliable source. |

what he probably noticed was that there's a chassis # cut-off between the old and new transmissions, and you've got the newer one. The visual difference is that the newer ones have park forward. The older ones have park to the rear. That change occurred late in the life of the 111 coupes, thus his considering it rare.
That transmission is far more solid then its predicessor, so he's not far off. As for hand-builtness. They pretty much went by chassis style (The 114/115 chassis cars introduced in 68 were by no means hand made). There's a lot of hand-work in your car. The dashwood on the 111 coupe series is custom cut to the car. Those little dash openings can be off by as much as 1/16" of an inch from one another. -CTH |
