Thinking of selling 1969 280se

The car is in great condition. It has a rare 1-2 transmission. It's white with red pinstripping. Light brown interior. 107,000 miles. Totally reliable.

The car is originally from Arizona. It has A/C, Power windows, FM radio (but the speaker needs to be replaced). I just did a proper and expensive rebuild of the Tranny. The fan clutch and brakes were done ~2,000 miles ago. I'm not sure how to make the pics smaller. I'll try soon.

Since you have a Canadian locale, is the speedometer in miles or km's? What price range are you considering? Post a picture of the engine compartment and detail any rust existing for a prospective buyer.

The car was originally from Arizona, so I assume the speed is calibrated in miles.

I too would like to know the price? pics of engine baby? any rust? can the car be driven from Canada to California in its current condiiton?

Yes, everything is in mph. The car could definitely be driven to California, if you don't mind putting on the miles. Maybe an oil change before might be a good idea, just to play it safe. I will do that for a buyer. There is no real rust, but there is a bit of bubling starting form under the front lights. If I find any rust, I'll take pics of it, but I'll make sure I take some of the engine compartment. According to http://www.manheimgold.com/car_lo.html the car is in the $16,000 USD range.

What is a "rare 1-2" transmission?

Thanks,

Between gears, there is a band or a clutch. Mercedes offered a transmission option where there was a band between first and second gear instead of it being between the third and fourth gears. Most transmissions have the latter. looking at the shifter the pattern is:
P
R
N
4
3
2

The shift between 1st and 2nd is quicker, around 1500rpm. Between the other gears, under normal acceleration, it shifts at about 2500rpm.

If it's like the automatics in the SL's of the time (W113), it would be a second gear start. If you put the auto into the "2" position, it will start in 1st gear and quickly move to 2nd unless you keep the pedal down pretty far. Just like all transmissions, shift point is a function of throttle position, vacuum, etc.

I've never heard of these "bands" or optional transmissions. They very well may be different than earlier or later automatics, but I don't think you could go to the dealer and order a car with a specially tuned automatic transmission vs. a normal automatic transmission. Has anyone ever heard of this??

Regardless, it looks like a pretty nice car!
