BMW 524Td-non running

I'm listing this for a co-worker. He just bought the car and ran into money problems, so he has to sell. He's asking $500.

Car is white with light gray interior. Paint is ok with some small dents and a few spots of rust. Interior is mostly there and in good shape, but needs thorough cleaning. Seats aren't cracked, but rear panel of driver's seat has come off and is sitting in back seat. Right rear door does not close properly. The car does not have a battery, and has not run in six months, reason unknown. I checked the oil, and it is not over or under full and does not have coolant smell. Tires and BMW alloy wheels are in good shape.

The car is located in Carson City, NV. If interested, call (775) 246-7076. Ask for Joseph.

Is that a gray market car?

Reason I ask, is because that exact model is HUGELY popular in Europe and the UK, you used to see them everywhere. Diesel BMWs are highly sought after over there.

I don't know. How can you tell if it's gray market?

I do know that it's only the second 524Td I've ever seen.

I doubt it's a grey market car, BMW imported the 524TD in the mid 80's and that engine was also used in Lincoln MK VII's and small motorhomes as well during that time.

These are nice cars. This series of BMWs is really fun to drive. If anyone wants to buy this guys car, my mechanic has a "parked" 524TD that needs a diesel fuel system cleaning, fluid change, etc. to run. Automatic (yuck) but the two cars might produce one really nice BMW oil burner.

I'm told they only imported the automatic...couldn't justify testing 2 gearbox combo's for federal OK, since the automatic was the only gearbox in the Lincoln Conti and Mark VII, and the little motor homes. There was a 5 speed on ebay recently, that was clearly a gray market import.

Timing belt?

Is it a belt or chain? My 325e had a belt that needed changing every 60K miles to be on the safe side (BMW recommended 90K). It wasn't a costly item, parts or labor - but I can't say for the diesel.

I love the Five-series BMW's. Much sportier than a 123 M-B. The 124 cars leveled that playing field.

It is a super wide belt that costs big $$$, and the labor isn't cheap. Figure arouf $400.00 to change the belt. If the belt breaks the car will make a good doghouse.

I talked to Joseph yesterday, but forgot to ask if the car is still for sale. I know he planned on working on it today.

Update: He's gotten over the short-term money problem, but is getting frustrated since he hasn't gotten it running, so it's still for sale.
