Buying a used 80's something diesel MB...

thoughts.....
In the market for a Diesel.(leaning to early 80's)

I was in the market for a decent used MB diesel. I looked at EBay, they seem rather high in price and some sellers see less the honest. Specifically, I was looking for a 80's 300 Turbocharged diesel. I do like the 240D, 300 D Turbo, and the 300SD. From what I understood, the 240D is easier to understand/fix/maintain for the DIYer. The 300D Turbo I would guess, has more pick up then the 240D. (I remember the 240D being very slow. but relativily uncomplicated under the hood) The 300SD seems all around nicer and more comfortable and bigger. The Ebay prices seem to be wild, some sell for a mint, others sell for a low price. I'm more inclined to look here then EBay, or bid on an active members car on E-Bay.

For a beginner DIYer, what model would you recomend? The above were my thoughts on this. as for price, i dont know what to expect.

I got a 1981 Mercedes Benz 240d that runs well but needs some repair. The transmission is not working properly, all the vacuum controls are not properly routed and the trans. itself has been overheated, so even after fixing the vacuum controls the trans. may still need rebuild/replace. If you know someone who could do the work, than this car wouldn't be a bad deal, I will sell it for $600 obo. If you want to know more please email me: therotaryrocket@yahoo.com
btw, also needs starter and alternator repair, aswell as seats. I got ripped off by someone else, but my loss could be your gain. thanks, zach
