I just purchased a 1987 560SL from its original owner, now that its all fixed and enjoyed by an enthousiast, its for sale once again. Signal red paint with the tan leather and chrome wheels.

The car has low mileage at 109k, clear carfax 1 owner, 1 year new soft top and very nice hardtop. The pictures speak for themselves. I will be replacing a few small items on there such as the passenger headlight door before selling. Its a real gem and truely wish I could keep it but I just cant.

the asking price is $15,000 obo. I am also in the process of gathering all the service records from the previous owner.

The missing headlight cover has been replaced so the car is now complete to its last item. The driver side windshield squirter is cloged so that is getting soon replaced as well. Nothing else needs attention thankfully.

15k is a tad high for a gasser with over 100k miles. Even though the condition is beautiful / restored, I don't think most people would pay that much. Hell, a dealership by me has 5 older SL's for sale, in equally good condition, and are asking 13-18k a piece for them. They didn't sell a single one, until the dropped the prices a bit.

I'm not saying you're wrong for asking that much. If you can GET $15k, more power to you. But a vehicle with 109,000 on the clock, it may be a little more than most people are willing to pay. $11,500 - $13,000 would be better "priced to sell", IMHO.

At any rate, good luck. Looks like a real beauty, shame you need to get rid of it.

I looked back at the postings on here for similar sl's and I took the average price. If you guys think its high, we could make it $13,500 obo.

By all means, if you think it's worth $15k, don't sell yourself short. I don't have the money for a new (old) benz right now, anyway... but I just found it to be a bit high.

Maybe the value went up, and I just don't know it. Like I said, no matter what you price it at, good luck with it.. hopefully it'll be getting another dedicated owner.

$15k sounds high, but the condition mileage and color sounds RIGHT.

And don't forget they are *not* just cars (especially a late red R107) They are like a fashion accessory, like a string of Mikkimoto pearls, to a woman.
They are desired in a visceral way no Mercedes W123 TDT wagon ever could be

Even today, more likely used for cruising from the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel to the Palm Springs Tennis Club; or at the Hamptons, West Palm Beach or Scarsdale..(than used as a long distance highway hauler). They fit in REAL good in scenery like that.

Only part of what is being bought here is the car; it's still about IMAGE with these, too, even after the last new one was sold in 1989; they still LOOK good today, remember how Richard Gere drove a black 450SL in "American Gigolo", they don't carve corners too well, the interiors are cramped for some, the gauges are outmoded as to other late 80's Benzes, they are not terribly quick by today's standards, but they still have the old world quality, and they have the IMAGE,

and while a trashed dark green '75 might only b ring $6k, a mint RED '87 could fetch in the low teens, all it takes is one motivated buyer, and if this one is fully restored with books and records, has no accidents or issues and is turn key, a buyer could WELL step up and pay a premium price for one in tip top shape, either on the basis of getting the best possible example, or chasing that must have fashion accessory

You never know... A late SL in Signal or Lipstick red with a snow white interior and in mint turnkey shape could really do well in the SL marketplace

thanks guys for the warm words. I am not too set on price as I am not too much in a hurry to sell. In that price range it sounds about right to me. From the looks of other 560sl on the forum that have been advertized my price range is right in the middle of them.

Lets just hope it strikes someone's fancy before these cars go up in price

If you truly love the car (and being the enthusiast that you seem to be, you probably do..), just be sure that whoever you sell it to will take really good care of it.

The last thing anybody wants, is to hear that the car that they once loved, was bought by 19 year old spoiled-rotten kid who got drunk at his buddies' house, and ended up smashing the thing into a tree. I know these things have way more value than my 84 Euro 300D, but the sentimental value sometimes plays a huge role.

I know that if I was ever forced to sell my 300D (even if the new 300D I bought was in better shape), I'd be hard-pressed to sell it to anybody who didn't have a love for these vehicles. Maybe I'm just strange, but I guess I've grown "attached" to these cars (espically the diesels). Sometimes, it may be better to drop the price, and sell it to an enthusiast, rather than have some yuppie pay the full price. At least, for me it is.. Just my 2c.

zerohour3k, I fully agree with you. I dont know if you happened to follow my restoration of a 78 450sel. First car, first true passion and lots of money effort sweat and blood went into it. I then sold it and walked away from it feeling a part of me had been robbed. No matter the price I received for it. This SL, im not too much in a rush to sell. If someone likes it then they will care for it. People in general who look for these cars seem to know and care a little bit more about it then some other cars. My price is rather flexible for the moment being.

We will see who gets it in the end, they will most likely enjoy it as much as I do.

I found the price of these cars to track the price of fuel. If the current trend continues they coud go up once again. !5K I still think is acceptable for an absolutly perfect specimen. I paid 13.5 for mine 2 years ago with 100K but it was far from perfect.
