Someone willing to pay $4500 for a $500 car so they can run WVO, and thus stick it to the oil companies, the tax man, and GWB, while preventing global warming, and thus saving the planet, the whales, and Jane Fonda. Haven't you been paying attention??

Oh, I dunno about that stuff. Never been there, never seen it. I think I did see that 240D though, back when Diesel Power owned it.

I have 3 Mercedes diesels plus a fuel oil boiler. I live on temperate Long Island so I go through about 800 gallons of fuel oil per year plus about 1200 gallons of fuel for the cars. I just paid 1.95 for fuel oil and diesel here is about 2.85. That makes my outlay for dino fuel about $5,000. If I can make biodiesel for about .50 per gallon it will cost me $1,000. That is a yearly net savings of $4,000. Of course that does not include setup costs for the biodiesel processor and collection and dispensing equipment, or my time for collecting and making the biodiesel.

My budget for the processor and the rest of it will be about $1,500 plus my free labor. With my lower middle class income it makes alot of sense for me. Plus I like the idea of not buying foreign oil, and that the engines run better plus the biodiesel is less polluting than dino diesel.

heh... so i told a lil lie at least i will get the point across
This may not fit in this thread, but would it require major alterations put a 5-cyl. engine from a 76 115 300D into a 74 115 240D?
Thanks,
Vince

I may easily be wrong about this, but an English motorhead friend of mine has told me more than once that he had worked on and driven 240d with a turbocharger and a 5-spd manual. Not hot rods. Factory stock. I have a 300d with a 5-spd, german market car, so I can attest that there was such a thing in diesels back then.

A friend of mine has one of the turbo kits for a 240D in his garage, but they were never factory. 5-speed transmissions I think started showing up around 84 in the euro models. Thats the earliest one I've seen anyways.

I am having that exact thing done as soon as I can get an appointment.

The guy's daily driver is a 1968 220D with a OM617.916 with a Rajay turbocharger with a 4 speed and a 2.88 rear end. I took a ride in it and it was arguably the fastest 220D ever! I plan to do the same with my 240D....although I am hesitant with the turbo idea because of the extra stresses on the whole system.

I thought 240D's were never turbocharged from the factory...unless it's the Indian manufacture motor in current production.

I have a '81 300d, greymarket car with 5 speed manual. Someone must have been importing them, because they show up on ebay every now and then.
It's an interesting car. crank-up windows, manual seats, sunroof doesn't even have a crank. You rotate this tee-shape lever and with a mighty cry of "sieg heil!" you pull the roof open. Or tear the rotator cuff in your shoulder, one or the other.
