1987 300TDT for sale
For sale is a 1987 300TDT (Turbo Diesel Wagon).
I got it in 2001 and here was my original post about the car when I got it in 2001. Search over, got a diesel Reason for sale is that when I put on new brake pads for the car yesterday (Jan 27, 2007), I found the brake rotors also need replacing. Then these 20 year old calipers might require rebuilt as well. I was not confident that these rotors can be removed by me. Plus, I had decided that if the car needs something major in the $500 range, I would sell it rather than fixing. Anyway here is my description of this 20 year old diesel wagon. 1. Always starts on the first crank after glow (the starter was replaced sometime near 2003). 2. Engine is strong, transmission is good, and the rear differential is quiet. Among the three Mercedes we have, I always trust the mechanical ability of this car the best. Just this past Tuesday, I drove it to Chicago to get a Visa and it drove for 9 hours (round trip) and I stopped there for only one hour. Oil was changed regularly mainly based on fuel usage (odometer does not work). I tried to change oil every 120 or so gallons of fuels used. 3. I am the second owner. The first owner always had the car-serviced by the dealer. Since I got it, I did almost all the work by myself. The only work done by a local Indy was to replace the starter and the shut-off valve. 4. The odometer quit working many many years ago (in the hands of the first owner) when the car had only 62,000 miles. I truthfully do not know how many miles it has now. 5. New battery this month. 6. New tires about 4 months ago. Here are the things that do not work or have issues. 1. AC. It never worked since I own it in the past 6 years. 2. Only the driver side window can be worked reliably (90% of the time). The other three windows have only 20% of the chance working. However, these are caused by the switches, not the motor/mechanism. Once my daughter’s friend opened the rear passenger window then it did not go up. What I did was to apply 12 volts to the switch on the door and the window the rolled up immediately. 3. It uses about 1 quart of oil every 1500 – 2000 miles. I think most of it is leaked. I notice some oil below where it is parked over night. 4. There are 3 – 4 rust spots now. When I got the car, there was no very visible rusts (although it has some not very obvious ones). Now, there are some on the fenders. However, it is not nad at all for a 20 year old car. 5. The front brakes need work. Although I put on new pads yesterday, (I had to because the old pads were worn out and the car is still been driven daily.) the rotors must be replaced and it would be nice to rebuild the calipers. I notice the caliper rebuild kits were very inexpensive (like $4 each) but I have never done it before. These are what I can think of now. My one sentence description would be that the drive train is good but other areas need work. Remember it is a 20 year-old car. I do not expect the potential buyer just buys this car and drives it without putting some time and work into it. I am near Grand Rapids, MI (one hour north of it) and I would ask $1,500 for the wagon. Contact me though my profile. Thanks. |

My first thought, $1,500 is low just for a decent wagon like you described. Remember, its a rare bird.

Thanks, guys.
But it is 20 years old and have problems and issues. The buyer owns a shop so I feel it goes to the right person. |
