Maybe, if it is in good condition. For a few buying tips that apply to this model, take a look at www.mbcoupes.com (Buyers guide, it is for the gas coupe, but same body style as the diesel sedan you are looking at)

i was looking in to buying an sdl and the one thing that worried me was a potential for the heads to crack if overheated. i would really check it out before i put any money down. some obvious things to look for are oil/coolant mixing; checking both in the coolant reservior (you will see oil in with the coolant), and inside the oil filler cap (milky white-ish/gray substance) and the dip stick. even if i found nothing there i would probably get the head checked and pay for a pre purchase inspection.
let us know how you make out.

$3K is an excellent price for that vehicle, provided that it has no "major" flaws with the engine, body, or transmission.

If the head is cracked or there is rust on the body, the price is not attractive.

Be careful to thoroughly investigate the condition of that vehicle.

Pulling the head is the only way to check that there are no cracks. That will make for a very expensive PPI

The other telltale is residual pressure in the cooling system. Check the car after it's been sitting overnight. If the radiator hoses are difficult to press with finger pressure, there's likely head cracks. There shouldn't be a rush of air when you pull the radiator/reservoir cap.

Of course you should check the casting number of the head by the #2 injector. 603 xxx 14 xx is the original head which is prone to cracks. If the numbers in the 14 place are 17 or higher, it's probably been through the cracking episode. Could still have problems such as oil leaking into the #1 cylinder but cracks are unlikely.

Sounds like a deal

Last June I found a 1987 300SDL in Houston for my brother-in-law. He lives 80 miles outside of San Antonio on some property where he keeps cattle. He drives into San Antonio five days a week (that's 800 miles a week plus side trips) and was looking for something that would get decent mileage and run on biofuels. He also wanted something that would be comfortable on the open highway.

He did not want anything too pretty because he would be driving it over the back roads of south-central Texas and he had no way to keep the cattle from molesting the car when it is parked on his property (which they do; the hood ornament was promptly broken off by one of the cows scratching her chin with it and the windows are always a mess because the cattle lick the dew off of them in the morning. Cosmetically the car is a C- but mechanically a strong B+ or maybe an A-.

He is the third owner. The second owner had it for about a dozen years. Both he and the first owner had really good service records. Many parts had been replaced over the years as you might expect for a nineteen-year-old car with a quarter of a million miles on it. The engine and transmission are original.

Interestingly, he also had to replace the rear "wishbone." The car spent its first nine years in Virginia and the last ten in Texas so I thought it was unusual that such a part would rust through like that. Now that someone else is reporting the same problem I wonder if it is not something inherent in the design. Anyway, my brother-in-law got a used part (in good condition) for $100 and did the repair in the auto shop of the high school where his wife is an assistant principal. The shop teacher (not a dedicated Mercedes-Benz mechanic though) did lend a hand.

Was this $3,000, 19-year-old Benz with 253,000 miles a good deal? When I visited my brother-in-law at Christmas I saw that he had driven an additional 13,000 miles since last June and the only repair he had to make was that rear suspension piece I mentioned. I'd say he (and I) chose well.

By the way he is running it on biofuel right now with no problems. He did report getting mid- to high-20 mpg figures on diesel last summer. Since it was summer in Texas, and my brother-in-law driving, I know he had the AC on and the pedal to the metal.

Do you have pics you can share with us? Is it near StL? I will be in southern IL again in mid-March, and if it's close to IL, I could TRY to go have a quick look. I am no pro, by any stretch, but I could look for obvious rust and wear, anyway, and try the oil-cap blowby-test.

You are paying for a hobby, not buying a car

So don't worry about the price so much.

My ROT is that every fundamentally good car in running condition is worth $2K. Prices below that are for POS's.

ROT: Rule of Thumb
