High Selling 240D!
I watched this car all week, even put in a low bid. Didnt like all the rust on the car, but I thought if I won the auction for what I bid, I could live with the rust for awhile. I was amazed when I checked back later today and seen what it ended up bringing! I think the persons reserve was around $1600, so I imagine he is very happy! Item #150092939070. By the way, how do I copy and paste the ebay link to this page?(for some reason I can't do it, so I just type in the item number)

If it was a legit bid (i.e. not a shill high bid), I'd say someone is going to be VERY unhappy when they poke around and find all that rust!

Well, people definitely get carried away by their emotions during bidding.
But the seller is smart..show all the rust and the warts, and people feel like they know what they are getting, which allows them to be more comfortable and bid higher. I'd rather full disclosure of problems and recent fixes than "good car, looks OK to me". The latter is a big red flag. Bruce |

Good point, but folks who don't know better don't realize how much rust is hiding under that undercoating. I can see enough in the pics to know to stay away from that one. Did you see that giant bubble on the pass. side door, not to mention all the junk underneath? Yikes!

Scary.
There's nothing like a pre-purchase inspection. The tough part is, people think, ahh, the car is only $3K so even if it needs some work, I got it cheap. They don't realize (and I speak from W126 experience) you can easily pay 2x or more of the original price of the car in repairs, especially if it has cancer. I'd rather buy a car with a dead engine and great cosmetics than the other way around. Bruce |

You can't blame the seller on this one. They pointed out all the issues and supplied pics. Man, I need to e-bay my 78 300D. I should get 6-7 for it based on this one.

Holy cow mine is so much better than that one! It only has a little bit of rust in the doors from window seals and some battery tray burn but with that much rust at $3849, that's crazy.

Oh my..... $3800? That is disturbing. That car is getting some serious rust issues.... looks like the front drivers floor is already getting rust holes.
I know its a diesel here, but if that car brought $3800, I should be able to get $5000 out of my 85' 380SE (NO RUST) with a worn engine. |

Don't let your rear suspension subframe arms get this rusty! They will get weak from the rust and break on you at some point.
POR-15 is your friend. And so is an engine oil leak. Ken300D

Well as gas prices rise the diesels are at a premium, but that is a $1500 car retail. I have to agree with Bruce, restoring cosmetic issues can get pricey real quick, If I had half the knowledge now of when I bought my SEC I would have looked for a better cosmetic example. Now when I bought the SD I was much better prepared and found a real nice one.

So, being new to the forum, I just have to ask:
Did the manual transmission help on the premium? Do folks normally pay more if they can personally inspect the car? |
